Strong Pitching, Timely Power Propel Gannon to Sweep of Pitt-Johnstown

ERIE, Pa. – Playing for the first time at home since March 24, the Gannon softball team received a pair of great pitching efforts and two key home runs to sweep Pitt-Johnstown on Thursday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Knights won the first game 5-3, then claimed a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

The weather has wreaked havoc with the Gannon schedule in recent weeks, but weather permitting they will play three doubleheaders in four days. A fourth doubleheader at Cal U on Monday was postponed due to rain in the third inning of the first game. The doubleheader sweep, coming two days after a split with Seton Hill, leaves Gannon at 13-9 overall and 5-1 in the PSAC West. UPJ dropped to 15-12 and 3-3 in league play. The Golden Knights are back in action on Friday hosting Indiana(Pa.) in another twinbill at 2:30 p.m.

GAME 1 – Gannon 5, Pitt-Johnstown 3
Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) won her third straight game to improve to 6-5. The graduate student scattered seven hits and walked four while striking out five. The three runs allowed were actually the most given up in her last five starts, but the Gannon offense provided her with five runs, tied for the most in the last seven games. Gannon opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Katie Sidare (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central) opened the inning with a double to right center and moved to third on Jules Ryan's (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) sacrifice. DeMatteis helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly to center field. UPJ grabbed a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning on three hits and a walk, but Gannon regained the lead with a pair of its own in the bottom of the frame. DeMatteis once again drove in the first run as her single to center drove in her sister Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau), who had doubled. Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) drove in the second run with a single, plating Ryan. Gannon added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when Sidare hit a two-run homer to left. The runs came in handy when UPJ's Kayla Miehl hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh. Sidare was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, and Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) also was 2-for-3. Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) drove in a pair of runs. DeMatteis earned her 46th career win to move into a tie for ninth place in career victories. In addition, she is now tied for seventh in career strikeouts (371) and moved up to sixth in career innings pitched (516.1).

GAME 2 – Gannon 2, Pitt-Johnstown 0
Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) took the circle in the second game and threw a three-hit shutout to improve to 4-2. The senior did not walk a batter while pitching her fourth career shutout and first of the season, striking out a career-high nine batters in the process. UPJ's Tori Radvan matched Tatone for five innings but the Golden Knights finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning. Katie Sidare (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central) led off the inning with a single to left and one out later Lea Coffman (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) hit a two-run homer to left field. It was the second career home run for the junior.  Gannon finished with eight hits, with Tatone going 2-for-2 at the plate and Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) finishing 2-for-3. Tatone allowed just one runner past second base, that was a runner on third in the first with one out. She proceeded to strike out the next two batters.
