Paul Drops in 32 Points as Gannon Coasts to 95-64 Win over Seton Hill

ERIE, Pa.Lance-Amir Paul (Kingston, Jamaica/Putnam Science Academy) scored a season-high 32 points to lead five players in double figures as Gannon coasted to a 95-64 win over Seton Hill at the Hammermill Center on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Knights have now won two games in a row while improving to 11-7 overall and 8-6 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill is now 3-19 and 3-14, respectively.

Gannon edged the Griffins 66-60 less than a month ago in Greensburg, Pa., but pulled away early in the second meeting two sweep the season series for the second straight. The Golden Knights trailed just once, that at 3-2, and regained the lead for good on a Paul layup.

A pair of free throws by Drew Green pulled the Griffins within 11-9 six minutes into the game. But Gannon then caught fire, and over the next six minutes outscored Seton Hill 22-4 to build the lead to 33-13. During that stretch Gannon made four 3-pointers.

Seton Hill never pulled closer than 16 points the rest of the half, and Gannon led 53-24 at intermission as Paul was fouled in the final seconds shooting a three and made all three free throws. In the first half alone, Gannon shot 56.3 percent from the floor (18 of 32), and made 7 of 10 3-pointers. Seton Hill, meanwhile, was limited to 32.0 percent (8 of 25).

The second half proved no better for the Griffins as Gannon's lead grew to as many as 45 points at 93-48 on a resounding slam dunk by Robertas Jonaitis (Pakruojis, Lithuania/Greater Beckley Christian School) with 2:37 remaining. The Griffins would close the game on a 16-2 run for the final margin.

One game after Branden Olsen deposited 30 points for the Golden Knights, the first 30-point effort by a Gannon player since the 2016-17 season, Paul bettered that. The 6'0" redshirt sophomore made 9 of 17 field goals, including 4 of 6 from beyond the arc, and was 10 of 11 at the line. He added a game-high eight rebounds and handed out six assists. Paul has now scored in double figures in 16 of 17 games he has played in, and has had seven games with 20-or-more points.

Jonaitis made his third start of the season and finished with 12 points, making all five of his field goal attempts, and matched Paul's eight boards. The bench more than made its presence felt, with three of the five double-figure scorers playing in a reserve role. Alonde LeGrand (Harlem, N.Y./Berkshire) returned after missing the Edinboro game to make 3 of 6 3-pointers and finish with 14 points. Olsen had his third straight game in double digits with 11 points, adding five rebounds and four assists, while Donovan Forte (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights) was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor to total 10 points.

Gannon ended the game at 54.1 percent from the floor (33 of 61), the third time this season over 50 percent and the second straight game, and made 10 of 19 3-pointers. The Golden Knights finished at 19 of 27 from the charity stripe. One of the more impressive numbers, as well, was 19 assists as Gannon not only shot the ball very efficiently but played an unselfish brand of basketball. They also committed a season-low seven assists. GU won the rebound battle, 38 to 20, marking the 14th time in 18 games they won the battle of the boards.

Seton Hill made seven of its final eight shots to boost its field goal percentage to 39.0 percent (23 of 59). The Griffins were 7 of 25 on 3-pointers and made 11 of 14 free throws. Miles Monchecourt led SHU with 16 points. Ryan Meis added 14 and Jimmy Moon 11.

Gannon has now scored 90-or-more points in each of its last two games after scoring 90 in Wednesday's win over Edinboro. It's the second time this year Gannon has had back-to-back 90-point efforts. They have now had five games with 90-or-more points. That has not happened since the 2011-12 edition had seven games with 90-or-more points.

The Golden Knights will wrap up a three-game homestand on Monday, February 7 hosting Pitt-Johnstown at 7:30 p.m. at the Hammermill Center. It begins a tough week with Gannon facing the top three teams in the PSAC West. UPJ and Indiana(Pa.) are tied for first place at 13-2. Gannon hosts IUP on Saturday, February 12. In between the Golden Knights play at Mercyhurst (13-4) on Wednesday, February 9. UPJ edged Gannon, 81-79, on a last-second layup on January 29.
