Mims Scores 16 Points as Golden Knights Drop Opener at Ashland

ASHLAND, OhioDemetrius Mims (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) scored 16 points but the Gannon men's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with an 80-54 loss at Ashland on Tuesday night. After losing twice over the weekend Ashland is now 1-2.

The good news for the Golden Knights was that Mims picked up where he left off a year ago, leading Gannon with 16 points and seven rebounds. The 6'6" forward made 8-of-15 field goals.

In addition, guards Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) and Ike Herster (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) made their returns after missing large portions of the 2021-22 campaign with injuries. Clancy played in just five games a year ago and finished Tuesday's game with six points on a pair of 3-pointers. Herster was the only other Golden Knight in double figures, finishing with 12 points.

Gannon would never lead in the contest as the Eagles came out and scored the first six points of the game. The first half would end with Gannon trailing 41-20 while committing 15 turnovers and shooting just 28.0 percent from the floor (7-of-25). Ashland outscored Gannon 13-2 on turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

The Golden Knights went cold from the floor and Ashland took advantage with 15 straight points, part of a 24-4 run that made the score 39-15 with just over a minute to play. Gannon went almost seven minutes without a basket before Clancy drained a three from the right win with 55 seconds remaining in the half.

Ashland opened the half on a 9-3 run to go ahead 50-23, but Gannon used a 10-2 run to pull within 20 points at 55-35. Mims keyed the run with three baskets. The Eagles responded with 12 straight points and their lead eventually grew to 35 points at 72-35 with 5:13 remaining.

Gannon ended the evening shooting 31.3 percent from the floor (21-of-67), making 5-of-19 3-pointers, and going 7-for-11 from the line. Ashland came in at 49.1 percent from the floor (26-of-53), making 8-of-24 3-pointers, and went 20-of-23 at the line.

The Eagles held a narrow 39-37 advantage on the glass, although Gannon limited them to four offensive boards. After turning the ball over 15 times in the first half the Golden Knights committed just two over the final 20 minutes to finish with 17. Ashland committed 15 turnovers. The Eagles held a 36-26 advantage in points in the paint along with a 15-9 edge in points off turnovers.

Ashland had five players score in double figures, led by James Manns with 17 points. He came in having made 2-of-14 3-point attempts but when 5-of-7 vs. Gannon. Simon Wheeler added 15 points, all in the first half, as he went down with an injury early in the second half and did not return. Victor Searls had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Maceo Williams and Stefan Stanic finished with11 points apiece.

After playing an Ashland team that finished 18-10 last year, the going doesn't get any easier for the Golden Knights as they play at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, November 19. The Cardinals were 19-11 last season. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
