Senior Day went smoothly for the Gannon University women's volleyball team as the Golden Knights swept Slippery Rock to complete another perfect weekend.
Seniors
Marieke Zink (Muenster, Germany),
Sophia Glabus (Elmhurst, Ill./York), and
Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) all made an impact as Gannon swept Slippery Rock 25-21, 25-18, 25-9 in a Saturday afternoon match at Highmark Events Center.
Gannon, 21-5 overall, remained in first place in the PSAC West with a 13-1 record. (Clarion had a 12-1 record before playing IUP on Saturday night.) The Golden Knights clinched a home quarterfinal match in the PSAC Tournament on Saturday.
Zink, a setter, started the match and was especially effective in the first set when Gannon had to work to claim a 25-21 win. Overall, Zink recorded seven digs, including several impressive ones, and a team-high four aces, and five assists.
Glabus, a middle blocker, had six kills, a .429 hitting percentage, and two blocks, while Greenfield, another middle blocker, led Gannon with three blocks and added three kills.
"It's great to send the seniors out with a W," said Gannon coach
Matt Darling. "Maggie and Sophia have been with us for a long time. It was also just great that Mary (Zink) was able to get in the lineup today and make a big impact on the match. Actually, I think without her playing in the first set, we might have been down 1-0."
"She's a good player," Darling added. "I mean she's playing in a position where we have somebody who's doing a great job for us, but she comes to practice every day, puts in the work, and it was great to reward her with a little bit of PT on Senior Day."
Junior outside hitter
Madde Blake (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) led Gannon with 13 kills and 17 points while recording a .407 hitting percentage. Blake also tied sophomore libero
Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) with a team-high 18 digs. Freshman setter
Bengisu Arslan (Ankara, Turkey) dished out 35 assists. Sophomore outside hitter
Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) added 10 kills and 11 digs.
Gannon has a big weekend ahead when it plays two road matches against top PSAC West teams to close the regular season. The Knights will visit IUP at 6 p.m. on Friday before traveling to Clarion at 1 p.m. on Saturday. If Gannon beat IUP on Friday, Saturday's match could likely decide the PSAC West regular-season first-place team and the top Western Division seed in the upcoming PSAC Tournament.
The first ranked NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional poll will be released on Wednesday, and Gannon is likely to have a decent position. Gannon has won eight matches in a row and 15 of their past 16.
