NORTH CANTON, OH – For the first time all season, the Gannon women's volleyball team played a five-set match.
The Golden Knights kept coming back until they finally won.
Coach
Matt Darling's team came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to win a tough road match 3-2 against Walsh University in the Cecchini Center on Wednesday night. Gannon lost the first and third sets but won by scores of 20-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-14, 15-12.
The Knights had not played a five-set match in their first 23 outings. They never trailed in the fifth set, but Walsh scored four straight points to close the margin to 13-12 before GU scored the final two points.
The Golden Knights found out before the match that they are included on the initial list of 10 teams ranked in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region.
This was the final non-conference match of the regular season for Gannon, which improved to 19-5 after winning its seventh in a row and its 13th in 14 matches. Walsh, which was on a three-match winning streak, dipped to 12-10. The Cavaliers were coming off a 3-2 win over Findlay, which swept Gannon earlier in the season.
Gannon featured a balanced attack as four players had at least 13 kills: sophomore outside hitter
Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) (16), sophomore right side
Hailey Koch (Littleton, Col./Dakota Ridge) (15), senior middle blocker
Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) (14), and junior outside hitter
Madde Blake (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) (13). Koch led GU with a .370 hitting percentage.
Freshman setter Bengisu Arlsan, the reigning PSAC West Women's Volleyball Athlete of the Week, finished with 44 assists. Blake led Gannon with 19 digs, and
Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) added 17.
Gannon will turn its attention back to PSAC West competition this weekend. The Golden Knights will host Seton Hill on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing Slippery Rock at home on Saturday at 2 p.m.
