Golden Knights Drop 2-0 Decision to No. 2 Mercyhurst, host UPJ on Saturday with Home PSAC Quarterfinal Game on the Line

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's soccer team dropped round two of the season series with second-ranked Mercyhurst on a rainy and windy Tuesday evening on the campus of Mercyhurst. The Lakers shocked the Golden Knights with an early goal and added a second goal in the opening stages of the second half for a 2-0 win.

Gannon drops to 11-4-2 and 5-2-2 in the PSAC West while Mercyhurst won its 12th straight match, all by shutout, to improve to 16-0-1 and 9-0-0 in league play. The Lakers have clinched the top seed in the Western Division and a bye in the quarterfinals, while Gannon is tied with Seton Hill. The Golden Knights wrap up the regular season hosting Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m., while Seton Hill plays at California (Pa.) earlier in the day.

The second seed will host the third seed on Tuesday, November 1 in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament. While the tiebreakers are rather complicated, Gannon holds a slight edge over Seton Hill with one match remaining for both.

The Golden Knights were forced to play from behind almost instantly as Frank Lovett found the back of the net thanks to an assist from Sean Kerrigan just 30 seconds into the match. Mercyhurst would hold a 10-2 advantage in shots in the first half, then opened up a 2-0 lead with a goal by Kerrigan at 48:12.

Gannon had several better scoring opportunities in the second half with each team getting off five shots. Mercyhurst has still allowed just three goals this season.

The Lakers held a 15-7 advantage in shots, including 9-2 in shots on goal. They also held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Samuel Alarcon (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II) recorded seven saves in goal while Mercyhurst's Jonathan Gomes had a pair of saves.
