Gannon women's soccer team ties Seton Hill but clinches PSAC playoff berth

Sarah Fails scores and Golden Knights' defense dominates in second half

GREENSBURG, PA -- The Gannon University women's soccer rallied for a tie against Seton Hill on Saturday, and the Golden Knights clinched a PSAC playoff berth in the process.

Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season on an assist from Gabby Boden (Butler, Pa./Butler) early in the second half as Gannon rallied from a one-goal halftime deficit for a 1-1 tie at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.

After entering the day alone in first place in the PSAC West with 27 points, Gannon dropped into a first-place tie with archrival Mercyhurst. Both teams are 9-2-4 overall and 8-1-4 in the PSAC West with 28 points.

Gannon clinched a playoff berth because the top four teams advance to the PSAC Tournament, and fifth-place teams Pitt-Johnstown and California cannot catch Gannon in the standings. Both teams have 14 standings points.

Seton Hill moved to 6-2-6 overall and 4-2-6 in the PSAC West with 18 points. The Griffins remained in good position to claim a playoff berth.

Seton Hill took a 1-0 lead just 13:20 into the game when Jessica Molitoris scored off assists from Victoria Rothrauff and Mikayla Moyer.

The score stayed that way until 5 minutes into the second half, when Boden hit Fails with a through ball as she broke into the clear and beat the goalie to the low left.

Gannon dominated in several facets of the game, topping Seton Hill 16-2 on shots and 7-2 shots on goal. The Golden Knights also had 10 corner kicks to Seton Hill's one.

Gannon keeper Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) went the distance in the game and made one save. SHU goalie Grace Kenyon made six saves.

Gannon has three matches left, starting with a road match against California on October 22.
