CALIFORNIA, Pa. – For the eighth time this season, the 19
th-ranked Gannon women's basketball team limited its opponent to under 40 percent from the floor as the Golden Knights picked up a marquee road win over California (PA), 61-54, on Monday evening at the Convocation Center.
Following another strong defensive effort, the Golden Knights have now limited their opponents to under 60 points in 11 of 15 games this season, including five times in their last six outings.
The win, Gannon's ninth in its last 10 games, pushed the Knights record to 13-2 overall and 8-2 in PSAC play. Cal U fell to 9-3 on the season (4-3 PSAC).
In addition to limiting Cal to just 28.4 percent (21-of-74), Gannon also forced 16 turnovers. Offensively, Gannon shot 35 percent from the floor and knocked down 24-of-28 attempts from the free throw line (85.7%).
Gannon got standout performances from
Samantha Pirosko (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) and
Emma Wright (Fairview, Pa./Talawanda) on Monday evening. Pirosko finished the evening with 15 points and three rebounds, while Wright dropped in 14 points to go with a career-high 13 rebounds. Wright shot 4-of-6 from the field, 2-of-3 from behind the arc and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Poling rounded out Gannon's double-figure scorers with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) and
Ali Benim (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) also chipped in offensively for the Knights with eight and seven points, respectively.
Gannon scored 24 points in the paint and 15 points off turnovers in the win.
Dejah Terrell kept Cal within striking distance in the game with a game-high 19 points and 19 rebounds and lead the Vulcans. Terrell also finished the evening with five steals and four blocks. Cal U also got 12 points from Ciaira Loyd.
Despite the shooting woes, Cal was able to extend offensive possessions in the game with 19 offensive rebounds that turned into 20 second-chance points. Overall, the Vulcans outrebounded the Knights 44-42.
Gannon will return home to host Clarion on Wednesday evening. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Hammermill Center.
