Weather Delay, UPJ Can't Stop Lady Knights in 3-2 Season-Opening Win

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – After having their opening game with Notre Dame(Oh.) postponed last week, the Gannon University women's soccer team knows a thing or two about waiting to get the season started. On Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Knights were forced to endure a short delay of a little over a half hour due to inclement weather in the Johnstown area. Finally able to play, they took the field and posted a 3-2 win over Pitt-Johnstown to open the 2021 campaign. It also marked the PSAC West opener for both teams, with UPJ now falling to 1-2-0 overall.

Playing under less than ideal conditions, the Lady Knights were able to take a 1-0 lead at 30:40 as redshirt senior Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) scored the first goal of the season for Gannon, with an assist to freshman Gabby Boden (Butler, Pa./Butler).  That would be the lone score in the first half, with Gannon holding an 11-5 advantage in shots.

UPJ knotted the score at 1-1 less than five minutes into the second on the second goal of the season by Lydia Roman, with an assist to Morgan Kost.

Gannon would take a seemingly safe 3-1 lead with a pair of goals less than six minutes apart. Freshman Jamie Seneca (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) scored her first career goal off a feed from sophomore Logan Nicklas (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton). That goal was at 71:38, and was followed by the second goal of the day by Lewis at 77:25. It was the ninth time in her career she scored a pair of goals in a match. Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) set the goal up.

The Mountain Cats would make things uncomfortable for head coach Colin Peterson with a goal at 85:09, with Kost doing the honors. UPJ would have two more shots in the closing minutes, but Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) was up to the challenge in goal.

Gannon ended with a 16-15 advantage in shots, while UPJ had five corner kicks to three for Gannon. Solymosi, a senior, was credited with five saves. Sachi Negri had seven saves for UPJ.

The Lady Knights return to action on Saturday, September 11 hosting Seton Hill in the home opener at McConnell Family Stadium.
