Women's Volleyball Opens Season with Wins over Wilmington, AIC in Molloy Invitational

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Gannon University women's volleyball team started off the 2021 campaign in impressive fashion on Friday while competing in the Molloy Invitational at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lady Knights opened with a 3-0 win over Wilmington (Del.), prevailing by scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-18. In the evening, they disposed of American International by an identical 3-0 score. The sets were 25-19, 25-16, and 25-16.  Gannon has now won 27 straight regular season matches.

Gannon will face a pair of stern tests on Saturday, opposing a pair of teams that reached the Elite Eight in 2019. At 11 a.m., the Lady Knights face host Molloy, a team that finished with a 28-5 record in 2019 and won the NCAA East Regional.

The Lady Knights conclude the two-day tournament against Nebraska-Kearney at 3 p.m. in a rematch of the 2019 NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Nebraska-Kearney prevailed 3-1, and would finish as the national runnerup with a 38-1 record. The Lopers are ranked fourth in the AVCA Division II Preseason Top 25.

GANNON 3, WILMINGTON (DEL.) 0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-18)
Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Davidson) led a balanced effort with a team-high 11 kills, with an impressive .476, adding a pair of service aces.  Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) (Woodstock, Ontario / Woodstock Collegiate Inst.) added eight kills on a .429 hitting percentage, along with a team-high four block solos. Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) (Lanark, Ill. / Eastland) totaled 36 assists along with a team-high 11 digs. Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) contributed four service aces and seven digs.

GANNON 3, AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-16)
The Lady Knights used a strong hitting performance to subdue the Yellow Jackets. They hit .351 as a team, adding seven service aces and 49 digs. Sampson once again led in kills with 15, with a .344 hitting percentage, while adding three block assists and two service aces. Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon East) contributed nine kills and a team-high 13 digs, while Greenfield had seven kills and four block assists. Beyers was credited with 34 assists. Hall tied Dienek with 13 digs.  Katie Becht (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) added three service aces.
