Yildirim Scores Winning Goal on Penalty Kick as Gannon Rallies for 3-2 Win in Overtime over UDC

ERIE, Pa. Furkan Yildirim (Berlin, Germany/Thomas Mann Gymnasium) scored on a penalty kick with 29 seconds remaining in the first overtime as 12th-ranked Gannon rallied for a 3-2 win over the District of Columbia on Sunday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Knights are now 4-0-0 while UDC fell to 0-4-0.

Playing for the fourth time in seven days, Gannon found itself trailing 2-1 at the half. The Golden Knights would score the equalizer just 65 seconds into the second half, with Bek Nurlanbek doing the honors off a pass from Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College).  It was Nurlabek's second goal.

Neither team would score the rest of the way in regulation, forcing overtime. Gannon would have a pair of excellent opportunities in the extra session. The first came on a long blast that went high by Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain/) in the first minute of overtime. The second was also by Del Castillo, whose shot from 30 yards out was just wide left with three minutes remaining.

With the clock ticking down, freshman Herman Annberg pushed forward and was brought down in the box. That led to the penalty kick by Yildirim, who beat UDC goalkeeper Javier Abadia Torres to the left corner of the net for his third goal of the season.

Gannon took a quick 1-0 lead as Katsande scored on a breakaway just 6:38 into the match. It was the redshirt sophomore's third goal of the season.

UDC scored back-to-back goals for a 2-1 halftime advantage. Ignacio Pericet knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal at 24:59, assisted by Michel Egbame. Late in the half the Firebirds grabbed a 2-1 lead with a goal by Joseluiz Avalos at 37:36.

Gannon held a 13-10 advantage in shots. Maximiliano Rocco (Florence, S.C.) was in goal for the Golden Knights, although he was not credited with a save. Torres had two saves.
The Golden Knights will now have a chance to get a bit of a break after the busy early season slate, returning to action on Saturday, September 18 at Wilmington(Del.).
