Gannon Softball Splits in Regular-Season Finale

 
ERIE, Pa. –  The Gannon softball team completed the regular-season with a nonconference matchup with Tiffin, defeating the Dragons, 2-1, before falling, 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first inning, Taylor Whalen led off with a single for Tiffin before coming around the bases after capitalizing on a throwing error to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Gannon answered in the third as senior Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) dropped her 36th career home run over the left field fence to level score.
  • Lea Coffman (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) singled to the infield avoiding a diving play by the Dragon's second baseman before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic).  Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) drove the ball out of the right fielder's reach to score Coffman for the game-winning run.
 
GAME NOTES
  • As a team, Gannon tallied four hits with two RBI.
  • Stocker set a new season-high with her 13th homer of the season.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) (12-8) was rewarded the victory limiting Tiffin to just one unearned run with two walks and two strikeouts.
  • Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) earned the save with two walks and two strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tiffin opened scoring in the third with a 1-0 lead using back-to-back doubles by Taylor Whalen and Laura Teunion-Smith. 
  • The Dragons produced two more runs, holding the Knights until the sixth inning when Lea Coffman (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) record Gannon's only hit of the game with a single up the middle. 
  • Maddie Krause (North Royalton, Ohio/Holy Name High) would walk to position runners on first and second but Tiffin's defense shut down the threat as the Knights went down 1-2-3.

GAME NOTES
  • Game two marked just the second time the Knights were held to one hit.
  • Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) was credited the loss allowing two runs (two earned) on six hits through four innings.
  • Katie Sidare (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central) finished in the circle with one earned run and two walks.
     
UP NEXT
  • The Golden Knights will make their 10th consecutive appearance in the PSAC Tournament, entering as the No. 2 seed.
  • Gannon will host No. 3 seed Cal in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 5 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium
