Gannon Women’s Water Polo Falls to Salem in WWPA Semifinals

O'FALLON, Ill. – The No. 5 Gannon women's water polo team fell to No. 1 Salem, 18-6, in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Semifinals on Sunday morning.  Gannon finished the season with a 4-14 overall record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon jumped on the board early at the 7:40 mark as Lauren Westphal (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza High) set up Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) to lead 1-0 before Salem used a 6-1 run to take the lead.
  • Ruh's strike in the second would find the back of the net to snap Salem's run as the senior completed a pass from Katie Baker (Erie, Pa./McDowell) to bring the score within three. Salem strung together three scores in the final three minutes of the half to give the Tigers a 11-4 advantage at halftime.
  • Salem netted three in two minutes before Gannon ended the run in the third with a score from Maddie Slater (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) as she connected with a pass from Julia Kreidinger (Erie, Pa./Villia Maria) after drawing the exclusion.
  • Nicole Wiemken (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) added to the board with her first goal of the game in the fourth but the Tigers built a large enough lead to hold the Knights off.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Salem shot 18-for-33 (.545) compared to Gannon's 6-for-34 (.176)
  • Five Golden Knights registered goals in the semifinal game led by Ruh with two while Kreidinger led with two assists.
  • Sydney Klakeg (Santa Barbara, Calif./Choate Rosemary Hall) recorded four saves and one steal through 32:00 minutes of play between the posts for Gannon.
  • Wiemken finished the season with a team- and career-high 55 goals followed by Ruh who finished with 38 scores.
  • Ruh finishes her career with 192 goals to tie fifth in the program's leader board alongside former teammate Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) (2015-18).  She is also finishes fourth with 108 assists and 120 earned kickouts.
  • Salem now advances to the WWPA Championship game and will face the winner of Mercyhurst and Fresno Pacific semifinal game.
