The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team mounted a comeback in a strong second half, but No. 22 Bucknell built a lead large enough to hold on for a win Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nicole Wiemken's (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) penalty shot with three minutes left in the first quarter got the Golden Knights to within 2-1, but the Bison scored three more in the final two minutes of the quarter. Bucknell managed to put up the first six goals of the second quarter, and held a 12-2 lead at the break.
  • Gannon got off to a strong start in the third, with Wiemken netting her second of the game and Libby Tirak (Erie, Pa./Villia Maria) and Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) following with scores of their own to make it 13-5.
  • Another run midway through the fourth saw the Knights' offense start ticking again. Wiemken scored the first and last goal of a four-goal run, with Tirak and Ruh each putting up one in the middle of the spurt.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Wiemken led the way with four goals on eight shots, adding two assists, two goals and a drawn exclusion on the game.
  • Ruh also posted two assists to go along with her two goals, also grabbing a pair of steals.
  • Tirak led with three steals to add to her two goals, while Mary Trese Squeglia (Erie, Pa./) also swiped three steals.
  • Sydney Klakeg (Santa Barbara, Calif./Choate Rosemary Hall) snagged six saves and added two steals in goal for the Golden Knights.
 
UP NEXT
  • Gannon wraps up its weekend with a pair of games Saturday, facing Mercyhurst in a WWPA contest at 11 a.m. and St. Francis at 6 p.m. back at the Hallman Aquatics Center.
  • Both games will feature live video and live statistics.
