HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cal U got on the board quickly, netting four runs off of a double and a home run in the bottom of the first. The Vulcans went quietly in the second, but another home run in the third made it 6-0.
  • The hosts went in order after a leadoff double in the fourth, but three singles plated two more runs in the fifth to give Cal U a win in the opener.

GAME 2

Final Score: California 10, Gannon 2 (5 inn.)
Box Score: Click Here

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams combined for just three hits through the first two-plus innings in the second game, but California opened up the offense in the bottom of the third. The Vulcans pushed six runs across in the frame to take the lead.
  • Two more in the bottom of the fourth pushed the Golden Knights to the brink, but a leadoff walk from Lyndsey Lakatos (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) got the Gannon bats moving. Hannah Neal (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven) singled to left, and a ground ball to the right side from Maddie Krause (North Royalton, Ohio/Holy Name High) got Gannon on the board.
  • Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) smacked a double to left center to make it 8-2, but the Vulcans plated two more in the bottom half to lock up the win.

GAME NOTES
  • Tuesday was the season opener for both teams after the series was pushed back due to cold temperatures over the weekend. It was also the opening for California's rededicated field, as the Vulcans hadn't played a true home game since the 2017 season.
  • For the Golden Knights, it was their return to action for the first time in 362 days after the 2020 season was cut short.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) tossed six strikeouts to just one walk in three innings of work in the opener, and didn't allow an earned run.
  • Neal reached base twice in Game 2, with a walk to go with a single.
  • Seven freshmen made their collegiate debuts for Gannon.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will return to Erie for its home opener against the Vulcans tomorrow at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • The 2:30 p.m. doubleheader will feature live video and live statistics.
