HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gannon got out to a hot start, scoring four times before the first quarter was halfway over to lead 4-1. Two of those were man-up opportunities that Robert Bolmanski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) cashed in on. A finish from Anthony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) to close the first quarter made it a 5-3 lead for the Golden Knights.
- The Bearcats figured something out in the short break between periods though, tying it up at 5-all within the first minute of the second quarter. Two more McKendree finishes around a tally from Bolmanski during a flurry of action late in the period made it an 8-6 McKendree lead at the break.
- Ethan Hamp (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben) answered the Bearcats' first goal of the second half with one of his own 10 seconds later to keep it a two-score deficit for the Knights midway through the third, but McKendree followed that up shortly with another goal to make it 10-7.
- Bolmanski fired in one late in the third and another early in the fourth to start the comeback, with Hamp making it three in a row to draw even at 10-10 with 5:40 to play. McKendree jumped back out to a two-goal lead over the next four minutes, and although Marty Kaverman (Erie, Pa./McDowell) brought Gannon back to within one with 1:33 to go, the Bearcats stifled the last few chances to hold on.
GAME NOTES
- What was supposed to be a two-game day got cut in half when the scheduled game against Salem was canceled. That one will be made up next weekend.
- Bolmanski paced Gannon with five goals. Hamp added two, while four others each chipped in with one.
- Jacob Hollo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) made 12 saves in goal for the Knights.
- The Golden Knights and Bearcats have engaged in a number of close ones, with the last four matchups being decided by an average of 2.5 goals.
- Gannon saw its run of 26 consecutive conference regular season wins snapped with the setback, but the Knights have still won two of the past three MAWPC-West tournament titles.
