Goals by Bingham, Gower Lead Gannon to 2-1 Win over Seton Hill in PSAC Quarterfinals

ERIE, Pa. – Thanks to goals from a pair of players who had not scored all season, the Gannon men's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the PSAC Men's Soccer Tournament with a hard-fought 2-1 quarterfinal win on Tuesday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium.

Gannon came into the tournament as the number two seed in the Western Division and improved to 15-2-2 while defeating Seton Hill for the third time this season. The third-seeded Griffins conclude their season at 9-8-2.

The Golden Knights move on the PSAC Final Four set for this weekend. They have a very short trip with Mercyhurst hosting the semifinals and finals on Friday, November 12 and Sunday, November 14. Gannon faces Lock Haven, the top seed in the Eastern Division, on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Head coach Billy Colton's team would control play throughout the match but was unable to take the lead until the 78th minute. After pressuring Seton Hill goalkeeper Bobby White all afternoon, they broke through off a free kick. Toby Gower's (Norwich, England/Long Stratton) long kick from the right side was headed into the bottom left corner of the net by Layton Bingham (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School), eluding White. The goal at 77:46 was the first goal of the season for the redshirt senior, and just his third career goal.

Seton Hill grabbed an early 1-0 lead at the 9:03 mark on a Wilfred Munn goal. Munn collected a rebound in front of the net, with his shot deflecting off a Gannon defender past goalkeeper Maximiliano Rocco (Florence, S.C.). It was Munn's third goal of the season.

Gannon evened the match at 1-1 just 91 seconds later. Magnus Clausen (Vraa, Denmark/Campus Vejle), making just his second start of the season, fed a long pass from the far right to Gower. Gower's near cartwheel kick had plenty of english on it, and ended up in the upper right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

The Golden Knights held a 20-7 advantage in shots, including 6-2 in shots on goal, and had seven corner kicks to none for Seton Hill. White registered four saves, while Rocco had one. That lone save denied Seton Hill from taking a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute. The transfer from Francis Marion made a sprawling save of a shot from five yards out in front of the net, diving to his left. The ball would deflect to his left to another Griffin, but his shot was deflected by defender Bautista Corti (Manuel Alberti, Argentina/Adultos 2000), with Rocco finally knocking the ball out of the box.

Gannon will make its fourth trip to the PSAC semifinals. The Golden Knights dropped a 1-0 decision to Millersville in the 2019 championship game, and previously lost in the semifinals in 2017 and 2012. The other semifinal features Mercyhurst against Millersville. The Marauders upset West Chester this afternoon 2-1 in overtime. The finals are set for Sunday with the time to be announced. The PSAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
