Gannon Draws With Slippery Rock on Senior Day

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon and Slippery Rock battled to a scoreless draw to wrap up the 2021 regular season following 110 minutes of play on Saturday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. Statistically Gannon held a 25-11 advantage in total shots, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.

The teams combined for 10 cards and 28 total fouls during the physical contest that was primarily dominated by defense and two great goalkeeper performances.

Following the conclusion of the PSAC regular season on Saturday, Gannon clinched the No. 2 seed in the PSAC West (11-2-3, 11-2-3 PSAC), while Slippery Rock locked up the No. 3 seed (12-3-3, 11-3-2 PSAC). The two teams will now meet on Tuesday evening back at McConnell Family Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the PSAC Women's Soccer Tournament. Mercyhurst won the PSAC West regular season crown and will host fourth-seeded Edinboro in the other western division matchup. Gannon and Slippery Rock will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

Following Tuesday's quarterfinal round, the PSAC Tournament action will move to Kutztown University, the top seed in the PSAC East, who will host the semifinals and finals of the tournament.

Prior to Saturday's game, Gannon women's soccer honored 14 seniors that played their final regular-season home game for the Golden Knights. The seniors included: Clara Almeter (Monroeville, Pa./Serra Catholic), Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame), Maria Camila Camacho, Ximena Chavarria (Managua, Nicaragua/Saint Dominic), Alexa Dix (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown), Elena Gabler (Teltow, Germany/Immanuel Kant Gymnasium), Ashleigh Kelly (Gold Coast, Australia/Palm Beach Currumbin State), Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek), Emma Manczka (Fairview, Pa./McDowell), Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City), Laurel Prokopchak (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek), Diante Scheepers (Batavia, N.Y./Radulphus College), Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic), and Molly Whaley (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy).

Gannon goalkeeper Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) recorded four saves in the shutout performance, three of which came in the second half. She did not face a shot on goal during the overtime sessions.

The Golden Knights nearly ended the game in the 103rd minute when Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) put a shot on target that was saved in the bottom right of the goal by Slippery Rock's Emma Yoder. Just seconds later Fails and Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) fired shots off the rebound of the save. McCartney's shot was saved by a defensive player with the goalkeeper out of position to preserve the draw for the Rock.

In all, Yoder finished the game with nine saves, including three in overtime to record a clean sheet.

Offensively, Fails had four shots on goal for Gannon, while Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) added two more to help lead the Knights on offense. Gannon also had eight corner kicks in the game.
