ERIE, Pa. – Gannon wrapped up the top seed in next week's PSAC Volleyball Tournament and won a share of the PSAC West regular season title with a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-23, 25-19) against California University of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon during senior day at the Hammermill Center.
Gannon finished the season with a 26-5 overall record and had a 13-3 mark in PSAC West action this season. GU and Edinboro finished the regular season tied at the top of the western division standings at 13-3, but the Golden Knights earned the tournament's top seed by virtue of the "sets won" tiebreaker between the two teams.
Gannon will host fourth-seeded Cal U in the PSAC Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday at the Hammermill Center, while second-seeded Edinboro will host third-seeded Clarion on the other side of the bracket.
In the east, top-seeded East Stroudsburg will host fourth-seeded Bloomsburg, while second-seeded Shepherd will host third-seeded West Chester in Tuesday quarterfinal round. The top remaining east seed will host the PSAC Volleyball Final Four next weekend.
In Saturday's win over Cal U, Gannon got 11 kills and seven digs from
Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and 10 kills from
Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran). Kerestes finished the match with a .556 hitting percentage, driving home 10 kills on 18 total attacks.
Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) and
Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) also chipped in seven kills apiece, while
Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) finished the afternoon with six.
With McClung's seven kills, the senior right-side hitter became the 19
th Gannon volleyball standout to record over 1,000 career kills. She now has 1,003 kills in her four seasons with the Golden Knight program.
Valeria Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) had a big day behind the service line for Gannon with four aces to go with four digs.
Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) led Gannon defensively with 17 digs from her libero position.
Katie Becht (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster),
Kenzie Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) and
Kirsten Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln Way West High School) each chipped in eight digs apiece for the Golden Knights.
Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) guided the GU attack with 36 assists.
Greenfield recorded a team-high three block assists.
Sarah Moehring paced Cal U (14-11, 9-7) with 12 kills in the setback. The Vulcans held an 8-4 advantage in total blocks.
