Gannon Drops 1-0 Decision to Millersville in PSAC Semifinals

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The clock has yet to strike midnight for a Millersville women's soccer team that has become the cinderella of the PSAC Women's Soccer Tournament. For Gannon, Friday's 1-0 loss to the Marauders in the semifinals leaves the Lady Knights having to wait until Monday evening to see if they receive a bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Bloomsburg is hosting the PSAC Final Four at Steph Pettit Stadium.

Millersville (9-6-4), the fourth seed out of the PSAC East, continued its improbable run to the championship thanks to a goal by Morgan Winchock at 41:28. The Marauders had upset Eastern Division top seed Kutztown in a shootout on Tuesday, while Gannon, seeded second in the PSAC West, outscored Slippery Rock 5-3 in its quarterfinal match to reach the semifinals for the fifth time. The Lady Knights were looking for their first PSAC championship.

Gannon (12-3-3) saw its streak of nine straight games without a loss come to an end with its first loss since October 6. The Lady Knights were 8-0-1 during that stretch. Gannon also lost to Millersville for the first time after winning the first nine games in the series.

Gannon was ranked fifth in the most recent NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings. The Lady Knights are in search of their first NCAA postseason berth since 2017. The NCAA will announce the tournament field on Monday night at 6:30 p.m., with seven teams making the Atlantic Regional.

Head coach Colin Petersen's Lady Knights had several opportunities in the first half, as did Millersville. Senior goalkeeper Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic), who was named a second team All-PSAC West honoree on Thursday, made three outstanding saves in the first half.

Unfortunately, Millersville would take advantage of a corner kick late in the first half to score the lone goal of the match. Paulina Jordan played in the corner, with Winchock gathering in the ball in traffic and hitting a diving shot into the right side past Solymosi.

The second half saw Millersville rely on its defense to hold off the Gannon attack. The best opportunity for a Gannon score came in the 77th minute. Alexa Dix (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown) went in on Marauders' goalkeeper Reagan Kolinski on a breakaway. Her shot to the right side was deflected away from the net by Kolinski.

Gannon held a 10-7 lead in shots, including 6-3 in the second half. Millersville led in shots on goal at 4-3, and also had six corner kicks compared to four for Gannon. Both goalkeepers were credited with three saves.

Millersville moves on to play Bloomsburg on Sunday, November 14 in the PSAC Championship game. The Huskies, the second seed in the PSAC East, upset Western Division top seed Mercyhurst 2-0 on Friday.
