Lewis scores twice, offense comes alive in 4-1 win over Clarion

CLARION, Pa. – The Gannon University women's soccer team's offense came alive on the road at Clarion on Saturday afternoon, scoring four goals in a 4-1 victory that increases the Golden Knights' winning streak to three games. The team has not lost since a 1-0 decision to Seton Hill on Sept. 11. Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) knocked in the first two goals of the game, while Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) added a third from open play and Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) tallied the fourth from the penalty spot. The Golden Knights' overall record now improves to 4-1-2 while Clarion falls to 2-4-1.

Gannon's offense pressured Clarion all game long, with statistical advantages in shots (20 to Clarion's 8), shots on goal (12 to 4), and corner kicks (5 to 0.) Bevacqua led the Golden Knights with four shots, while three other players (Lewis, Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria), and Emilie Hilliard (Phoenix, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough)) finished with three shots apiece.

Despite all that, it was Clarion who scored the first goal of the game against the run of play. Alexis Moyer dribbled down the left wing in the 10th minute, getting behind the defense and crossing for Jaci Bowser, who stayed onside and put it into the net for the 1-0 lead.

Lewis would answer for Gannon in the 29th minute after Logan Nicklas (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) drew two defenders down the left wing and fed the ball to Lewis. The resulting long-range shot sped into the net past Clarion keeper Alexandra Velez to equalize the game, 1-1.

Taylor completed her brace in the 56th minute thanks to some excellent service into the box. Bevacqua received the ball from Emma Manczka (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) on the right wing and whipped a cross with plenty of pace towards Lewis. She got her head on it and redirected it home to take the 2-1 lead.

Bevacqua notched a goal of her own in the 80th minute after dribbling past a couple of Clarion defenders, creating space to shoot, and placing it just inside the far post. Six minutes later, a free-running Fails was sandwiched in the box by a Clarion defender and Velez, earning a penalty kick. McCartney stepped up and smashed it past the diving Velez to seal the 4-1 victory.

With Saturday's victory, Gannon has now won ten consecutive matches against the Golden Eagles and have not lost to them since the 2010 season.

The Golden Knights have a busy schedule ahead against a couple of quality teams, with a midweek away match against PSAC West-leading Slippery Rock on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 1:00 p.m. before returning home on Oct. 9 to host Pitt-Johnstown at 5:00 p.m.
