GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) set the tone early delivering a single to center field and driving Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) home for the game's first run, 1-0, in the first frame.
  • Following a scoreless second inning, Gannon cracked the game open with a game-high five run third inning to extend its lead up to 6-0. The frame was highlighted by an Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillian) three run RBI to center field.  
  • The Knights continued to swing a hot bat into the fourth inning tacking on three more runs to push their lead up 9-0 after Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) drilled an RBI single to the pitcher.
  • The Gannon defense then went to work holding the Wildcats scoreless over the next four innings. The Knights put the game out of reach adding on four insurance runs in the ninth to secure their first win of the season, 13-0.

  • Wilmington entered the season ranked No. 24 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason Poll.
  • Gannon registered a season-high in hits (16), runs (13) and RBI (11).
  • Seven different Knights tallied at least one run.
  • Gannon had eight players contribute at least one hit.
  • The Knights also posted a season-best five stolen bases, including a career-high three from Hamm.
  • Wetherholt posted three hits, two RBI and one run.
  • Hess tallied a season-high four RBI with two hits and one run.
  • Quiceno contributed two hits, two RBI and two runs.
  • Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) (1-1) earned the win for Gannon posting a game-high seven strikeouts over 7.0 innings of action.
  • Andrew Mottola (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) came out of the bullpen for a frame and tossed three strikeouts.
  • John Bender (Wilson, N.Y./Wilson) finished the game on the mound and added in one strikeout.
