GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
KEY SEQUENCE
  • Aggressive all weekend on offense, Charleston put the pressure on again in the top of the ninth. An 0-2 single up the middle got things started, then a well-placed bunt and double steal gave the Golden Eagles two runners in scoring position with no outs. After a hit batter loaded the bases, Derek Dudek lifted a bases-clearing double to left center, suddenly making it a 6-0 game with just three outs left for Gannon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) worked his way around some early walks in his start, but Charleston cashed in a run on a wild pitch in the second for a 1-0 lead. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny) returned to the lineup with a double in the second, but was eventually the final out on a fielder's choice three batters later.
  • The Gannon bats went down in order in the fourth and Charleston cracked a key home run in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) came in out of the bullpen for his third relief appearance in as many days and got the final two outs of the fifth.
  • After a leadoff walk, Phelps sent down the Charleston lineup in order in the sixth. Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) worked a two-out walk in the sixth but Gannon was once again stifled by the Golden Eagles pitching. Phelps dug deep to fire a scoreless seventh, ending the inning with a strikeout pitch to keep the score at 3-0.
  • Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) opened the bottom of the seventh with a knock back up the middle, but Charleston hurler Jack Brunetti got three straight outs after that to limit the Gannon threat. The Eagles added to the damage in the top of the ninth, loading the bases then clearing them to double their advantage.
  • Gannon started threatening in the bottom of the ninth, starting with a one-out walk from Steighner. Zeroski lined a single to right to put two on with two out, and Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) kept his hot streak going with a rocket to center. That single got past the centerfielder and allowed Steighner to score and Zeroski to move up to third, but Charleston got out of the jam to preserve the win.

GAME NOTES
  • Phelps, who made five starts on the season, saw action out of the bullpen in all three days of the NCAA Atlantic Regional. He tossed an inning in Thursday's opener against Charleston, two frames of one-hit ball Friday against West Chester, and concluded his weekend with 4 1/3 innings and 61 pitches Saturday.
  • Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) continued his torrid pace at the plate over the last 27 hours. After opening the tournament with an 0-for-3 day Thursday, the redshirt freshman went 4-for-5 Friday in a must-win game, followed by 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a walk Saturday.
  • Zeroski capped his freshman campaign with his first career three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a double.
  • Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) closed his senior season by locking down the Gannon single-season record for home runs, notching 14 to go with 40 RBIs.
  • The run in the bottom of the ninth was a big one for the Golden Knights, who made it through the 2019 season without being shutout in a game. The run extends back to April 2018, as Gannon has not been held scoreless in 62 games.
  • Charleston continued an impressive run through the postseason. Needing to win the MEC autobid, the Golden Eagles did just that, winning four straight games including three by one run. They then allowed just four total runs in three games as the sixth seed at the Atlantic Regional to earn a trip to next weekend's super regional.

UP NEXT
  • The Golden Knights will be back for the 2020 season next spring.
