KEY SEQUENCE
  • Charleston eventually strung together an explosive offensive surge with three runs in the third, one in the fourth and four more in the fifth to jump ahead 8-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) was strong to begin the game with consecutive scoreless innings on the mound, while the Gannon offense was unable to push across any runs early despite having plenty of traffic on the basepaths.
  • The Golden Eagles built a 3-0 lead after an extended top half of the third before adding one more in the fourth. Gannon got a run back in the fourth with a Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny) single down the right field line, which plated Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) from third.
  • Charleston answered back in a big way with four runs in the fifth to pull ahead comfortably. The Golden Knights called upon Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) and Brandon Weber (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) on the mound, but the Golden Eagles offense did not relent.
  • Gannon eventually scrounged out its second run in the eighth with an Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) single that scored Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) from second. Charleston added two more runs in the top of the ninth for the 12-2 win.

GAME NOTES
  • Quiceno recorded the second three-hit game of the season to open the NCAA Tournament.
  • Sawyer Overhoff (Eden, N.Y./Eden), who entered the game for an ill Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny), notched his first collegiate hit in the eighth inning.
  • Gannon was patient at the plate, drawing eight walks as a team. Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) and Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) were each plunked to reach base in the matchup.
  • The Golden Eagles used multiple double plays to limit the Gannon offense in the early portions of the contest.
  • Charleston has won the Mountain East Conference Championship each of the past two seasons and are winners of nine of the last 10 games, including six consecutive victories.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will look to avoid elimination tomorrow morning against host West Chester.
  • First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. from Serpico Stadium.
