KEY SEQUENCE
  • A quick burst got Gannon to within three points less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, but California's DJ Hahn found a different gear to immediately swing the game. Hahn doubled the lead with a 3-pointer on the next possession, then ripped the ball away on defense and converted on the other end. Her second triple in a span of a minute suddenly made it 64-54, and the second-seeded Vulcans were able to hang on.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A pair of fastbreak baskets allowed Cal to run out to an 8-1 lead, but Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) got the Lady Knights right back in the game with a fastbreak 3-pointer off a feed from Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) on the other end. Obenrader added a corner 3 of her own on the next trip to cut it down to one at 8-7 during a fast-paced start.
  • A scoop shot from Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) after she worked for an offensive rebound got it down to 12-10 after a short burst from the Vulcans midway through the quarter. Both teams started heating up as the period wound down, with Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) and Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) hitting treys from the top of the arc and Rourke adding a jumper to make it 21-18.
  • Tewes started the second-quarter scoring with an acrobatic layup, then blocked a shot on the defensive end to get the ball back. That led to a pair of LaCava free throws that brought the Knights to within 23-22. The junior was later on the receiving end of a breakout starting on a Mitchell steal, and converted a three-point play to stop a short Cal run and cut it to 29-26 at the 6:13 mark.
  • Mitchell took over the game late in the half, hitting a pair of freebies with 1:36 left to draw it to 41-36. She then took a defensive rebound end-to-end for a slick lay-in, and found Rourke with a cross-court pass for a 3-pointer. A Rourke free throw in the final seconds suddenly made it a 42-42 Cal lead at the break.
  • The Gannon momentum continued despite the intermission, as Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) grabbed an offensive rebound and went back up to give the Knights their first lead of the night at 44-43. LaCava followed the same formula on the next possession to boost the lead to three just over a minute in, but the Vulcans ran off the next seven points to hold a four-point edge at the media timeout.
  • That seven-point spurt turned into an 11-2 run for Cal, which led 54-48 after three quarters. A quick bucket bumped that to eight points before L. Tewes toughed out a three-point play to stop the run and make it 56-51. Obenrader added a basket to get it to within three, but that's when Hahn started to heat up.
  • Free throws from Rourke and a strong drive out of Ivan Twumasi got it to 66-58 just before the fourth-quarter timeout, and an Obenrader finish from the block cut it to a seven-point deficit with three minutes left, but the Vulcans were able to answer each time.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon pushed five players into double figures in scoring for the third time this season, led by Rourke's 15. Mitchell and LaCava each had 12 and Obenrader and H. Tewes both added 10.
  • H. Tewes matched her season high with her 10 points.
  • The Lady Knights posted their best shooting night since mid-January, hitting 22-of-44 (50.0 percent) from the floor, their sixth time hitting at least half their shots.
  • Gannon won the rebounding battle 31-24. It's the ninth straight game the Knights have outrebounded their foe and 26th time overall in 31 games this season.
  • LaCava will leave her mark on the Gannon record book, finishing her career 31st in points (863), 11th in field goal percentage (51.5 percent) and 23rd in rebounds (450). Her senior campaign saw her finish third in single-season field goal percentage (59.8 percent), and 10th in free throws made (109).
  • Fellow senior L. Tewes will also see her name crack the record book, as she played in all 116 Gannon games over the span, tying for 20th all-time in games played. LaCava appeared in 115.
  • Rourke still has a season to continue to move up, but her block in Wednesday's game tied her for eighth in program history in career blocks with 98. It was also her 44th of the season, which ties her for eighth all-time.
  • As evidenced by her four straight PSAC West Freshman of the Week nods, Obenrader closed her first season in a flurry, averaging 10.8 points and 8.3 rebounds over her last nine games.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will kick off the 2019-20 season in November.
