KEY SEQUENCE
  • An entertaining first few minutes of the game got flipped on its head when one of the best shooting teams in the country in Pitt-Johnstown got hot. It started with a Josh Wise 3-pointer to tie things up, followed by three consecutive baskets as Gannon came up empty at its own end. By the time the Golden Knights called a timeout after another 3, UPJ had finished off a 13-0 run in just three minutes, leading 23-13 with 9:19 left, and held an advantage the rest of the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Baskets from Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and Kofi Mills (London, England/Martin Van Buren (N.Y.)) early got the Knights out to a 4-2 lead during a slow first few minutes. The game remained tight through the first eight minutes, which featured six ties and three lead changes. Four quick points from Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) drew Gannon even twice in a minute.
  • Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) gave the guests the lead back, slicing for a layup to make it 10-10, then hitting a 3-pointer from the right wing off a kick from Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) to push the Knights ahead 13-10. That's when the Mountain Cats answered with their first run to flip the script.
  • After UPJ ran off 13 straight to jump in front, a baseline jumper from Sean Colosimo (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) cut it back to single digits at 23-15. Colosimo added another jumper to make it a nine-point game once again at the 7:24 mark, and even though no scoring would happen for nearly the next four minutes, the hosts would get going again.
  • A layup and a big alley-oop dunk from the Cats were their only field goals for the rest of the half, but they went 12-for-12 at the charity stripe, including all three when Adam Kline was fouled shooting a last-second 3.
  • While the 22-point deficit at the break was a bit too much to overcome, the Golden Knights showed plenty of fight in the final 20 minutes. Seven straight points on the strength of a Harewood triple and two free throws sliced it to 17 less than five minutes after halftime.
  • Gannon got it to 13 at a few points, and played some of its best basketball of the night in the final eight minutes. The Knights finished the game on a 21-10 run, harassing UPJ into 10 turnovers during that span and committing just two themselves. A three-point play from Johnson, followed by a fastbreak from Dodds after a steal got the visitors to within 12, and Porter's final points of the game made it 69-59 with less than a minute to go.

GAME NOTES
  • The defeat will end Gannon's season, as the home teams won both the first-round matchups in the West. The top four seeds will meet in Wednesday's quarterfinals.
  • The win for Pitt-Johnstown means the Mountain Cats will close the season 13-1 on its home court, with the only loss coming to No. 2/3 Indiana.
  • Porter will close his Gannon career with six straight double-digit scoring efforts after recording a team-high 15 on Monday. The senior also added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • Harewood notched two of his better scoring efforts of the season to close the year, going for 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting against the Cats. That was one point off his career high.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will kick off the 2019-20 season in November.
