KEY SEQUENCE
  • After a Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) 3-pointer capped a 7-0 Gannon run to pull within six points at the midway point of the second half, IUP got two big plays from Willem Brandwijk, one a tip-in on a Crimson Hawk miss and the other a fastbreak dunk after the guests stretched the floor. Those came around another basket, and suddenly the No. 6 team in the country was back up by 12 at 63-51, and led by at least that much the rest of the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A quick bucket by each team got the game started, but IUP netted the next eight to go up 10-2 four minutes in. Porter stopped that run with the Knights' second basket of the day, and two 3-pointer from Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) preceded a Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) jumper that made it 13-12 by the 12:24 mark.
  • A three-point play from Sean Colosimo (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) tied things up a minute later, and another Harewood jumper gave Gannon its first lead at 17-15. The Hawks managed to get back in front and led by six with less than six minutes to go in the half, but treys from Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) and Porter cut it back to two at 27-25 with 3:29 on the clock.
  • IUP bumped it back to a seven-point game with less than a minute to go before the break, but a Porter layup made it a 33-28 game, and it would go to the break at that score after the Golden Knights held on the final possession.
  • Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) sliced the deficit to four 90 seconds in to the second half, and Harewood buried a 3-pointer at the 17:21 mark to make it 36-33. Gannon got a stop on the next IUP possession, but wasn't able to convert itself, and an IUP 3-pointer doubled the lead. That started an 11-1 run for the Hawks, who ballooned their lead to 13 just over five minutes into the period.
  • The lead flipped between 10 and 13 for the next few minutes, until Olawoye stepped into a 3-pointer, nailed it, and was fouled. He hit the free throw, and Porter canned his own triple after an IUP turnover to get the Knights within six before IUP halted any momentum with its quick run.
  • The visitors never led by more than 15, but Gannon did not get closer than 12 the rest of the way, with baskets from Harewood, Olawoye cutting it back to a dozen points down the stretch.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's games celebrated Make-A-Wish, as Gannon Athletics was able to reveal to 13-year-old Gabby that her wish to go on a cruise to Hawaii was coming true.
  • Porter was taken off the court after suffering an inadvertent elbow late in the second half. All reports postgame were positive regarding his condition.
  • Colosimo  made his season debut on Wednesday and had only seen the floor for a total of eight minutes over four games in his career entering Saturday. The sophomore got 29 minutes against IUP alone, and responded with six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • Olawoye had his fourth consecutive double-digit game, scoring a team-high 16 on 4-of-7 shooting, all from beyond the arc. It's the fifth time this season the freshman has hit at least four treys.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon splits its four-of-five-at-home stretch in half with a road trip to California (Pa.) Wednesday.
  • The 7:30 p.m. tip from the Convocation Center will feature live video, live stats and live audio.
  • The Golden Knights hold a 19-14 lead in the all-time series against the Vulcans, although Cal edged closer with a 72-57 win at the Hammermill Center Jan. 5.
  • Cal sits precariously in sixth place in the PSAC West at 7-14 (5-10 PSAC) after suffering a tough 79-75 defeat home against Edinboro Saturday afternoon.
