KEY SEQUENCE
  • After a bit of a run from Clarion tied the game just over five minutes in, Gannon followed with perhaps its best stretch of basketball all season, as they scored on eight of their next nine possessions to answer and ended the half on what would be a 27-8 run. The biggest moments came when Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) hit 3-pointers on two straight possessions to force a Clarion timeout, only for Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) to add another triple coming out of the timeout to make it 29-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Back-to-back buckets from Kofi Mills (London, England/Martin Van Buren (N.Y.)) to start the game got Gannon out to a 4-0 lead 36 seconds in, and a steal and score from Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) made it 8-1 to continue the hot start. Clarion would heat up from beyond the arc, making three 3-pointers in a span of three minutes to tie it up at 10-10 with 14:46 on the clock.
  • A layup from Mills halted the run by the Golden Eagles a minute later, and started the game-changing run for Gannon. Second-chance points from Porter kept the Knights from going empty on two straight possessions to make it 18-10, and Mills capped a 10-0 run before Clarion could find the bottom of the hoop again with a 3-pointer.
  • Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) kept the run going with a layup after Gannon's flurry of triples, Mills added another as the clock neared two minutes, and Olawoye hit a 3 from the right side to suddenly make it 37-13. Clarion finally ended that 17-0 run with free throws, and managed to score the final five points of the half to cut it to 19 at the intermission.
  • Mills started the second half in a similar fashion to the first, scoring the first four points. Olawoye added a pair of free throws, and Gannon had bumped its lead back out to 25 at 43-18 less than three minutes into the half. The hosts were able to take advantage of a cold spell from the Knights though, and got it back to 43-25 with a 7-0 spurt.
  • DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) followed that up with a bucket off a feed from Olawoye the next trip down the court, and Gannon began to pound the ball inside. Another bucket from Cisero made it 55-34 with 7:14 to play, and the Knights would lead by at least 20 the rest of the way.
  • That Cisero layup started an 11-point burst for Gannon, as layups from Johnson and Cisero preceded a Johnson 3-pointer. After a pair of Olawoye free throws, the guests held a 30-point edge with 3:26 to play and would cruise to the win.

GAME NOTES
  • The victory clinched a spot in the PSAC playoffs for the Golden Knights, who will hit the road on Monday evening in the first round. It's the third straight postseason appearance for Gannon, and the eighth time in its 11 years in the conference.
  • Gannon appears headed to Pitt-Johnstown on Monday as the fifth seed. The only thing that could change that is a Golden Knight loss to Slippery Rock and a Seton Hill win over IUP on Saturday, in which case Gannon would make the short trip to Mercyhurst.
  • The defense pressure put on by the Knights led to results rarely matched in the recent history of the program. They held Clarion to 36 points, 11 made field goals and a 27.5 shooting percentage while forcing 27 turnovers out of the Golden Eagles. None of those numbers have been matched in at least five years. You'd have to go back to Jan. 8, 2014 against Cheyney, when the Wolves shot just 22.6 from the field. Another two years early, against Lock Haven on Feb. 18, 2012, the Bald Eagles were held to 35 points and made just 10 field goals.
  • Both of those games were in the friendly confines of the Hammermill Center. Gannon held Slippery Rock to 25.8-percent shooting on the road in 2009-10, but hasn't held an opponent to fewer than 11 field goals or 36 points away from home since before the 2002-03 season.
  • A Gannon opponent hasn't been forced into more than 27 turnovers since Lock Haven coughed it up 28 times during the 2008-09 season.
  • In two games against Clarion this season, Gannon has held the Golden Eagles to just 84 total points.
  • Mills played a career-high 37 minutes and responded with a career-high 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting. The senior added six rebounds and two steals as well.
  • The Knights held a 36-8 edge in points in the paint.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will close the regular season with the return trip to Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon.
  • The 3 p.m. tip from Morrow Field House will feature live video, live stats and live audio.
  • The Golden Knights hold a 31-16 lead in the all-time series against the Rock, and will be looking for the series sweep after pulling the upset against them at the Hammermill Center on Jan. 30.
  • Slippery Rock is locked into the second seed in the PSAC playoffs after its bye on Wednesday coupled with an IUP win. Still, SRU will be playing to improve its NCAA resume.
