KEY SEQUENCE
  • After his team forced overtime with the final four points of regulation, Edinboro's Jaryn Simpson found a new level, opening the extra frame with a 3-pointer, hitting a step-back trey with two minutes to go, and converting a short jumper and a pair of free throws in the final minute to seal the victory Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sean Colosimo (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) got the scoring started in the first two minutes, but Edinboro responded with two straight 3-pointers to jump ahead three minutes in. Buckets from Jonathan Harewood (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Olawoye tied things up at 10-all, but the Fighting Scots hit back-to-back triples again, this time keying a 10-0 run.
  • Down by 10 just over 10 minutes into the game, Olawoye kept scoring, hitting Gannon's first 3-pointer of the afternoon to stop the Edinboro run and make it 20-13 at the 8:29 mark. That started a quick seven-point burst for the Knights that got them back in it.
  • That 7-0 run turned into a 14-3 spurt, as Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing and DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) muscled through for a layup to put Gannon ahead for the first time in nearly 13 minutes at 24-23 with 3:25 left before the break. Edinboro managed to net six of the final eight points to take a 30-28 lead into the locker room.
  • Olawoye posted a pair of tricky layups to start the second half, and an offensive board and stickback from Fustine drew a timeout from Edinboro less than two minutes into the second half as the guests looked to halt what turned into an 8-0 run. It wasn't immediate, but the Scots were able to halt the run with a traditional three-point play from Trey Staunch some 70 seconds after the timeout.
  • A hustle play from Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) wound up getting Colosimo free, and from his backside, Dodds found his teammate on the left wing, where he buried a 3-pointer to make it 41-35. Free throws from Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) bumped it to a six-point lead again, but seven straight from Edinboro flipped the lead for the first time in the half with 10:21 to play.
  • A fastbreak dunk from DeAnthony Owens gave the visitors a 48-47 lead and forced a timeout from the Knights, who came out of the timeout with a slick layup from Fustine to retake the lead. Daylon Harris followed a Colosimo 15-footer with a three-point play to give the fans two more lead changes, but Colosimo answered with a big offensive rebound and jumper over traffic to tie things up at 55-55 with four minutes to play.
  • Coming out of the final media timeout, Dodds slashed across the lane and dished to Olawoye in the left corner, who took one step to avoid a defender and nailed the go-ahead 3-pointer. The freshman then went the length of the floor after an Edinboro miss to lay one in that made it a 60-55 game with 2:37 to play.
  • A pair of buckets over the next minute and a half got the Fighting Scots to within one possession, and Owens converted inside to tie it up with 1.6 seconds left in regulation.

 GAME NOTES
  • Olawoye matched his career high with 23 points, hitting 9-of-21 from the field and 3-of-4 at the line. The freshman added a career-high seven rebounds and a game-high four assists.
  • Colosimo continues to play big minutes for the Golden Knights, as the sophomore netted a career-high 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting, and hit his first career 3-pointer.
  • It was the second straight overtime game for Gannon after the Knights topped California in bonus time Wednesday. It's the first time Gannon has played in back-to-back overtime games since they went past regulation in five of six games -- and won all of them -- midway through the 2016-17 season.
  • Gannon matched its fewest turnovers in a game this season, giving the ball away just nine times Saturday. They achieved the same efficiency 10 days ago against Seton Hill, and are averaging just 10.3 per game over their last four outings.
  • The Golden Knights played just eight men, the shortest rotation of the season. Six of those -- the five starters Dodds, Fustine, Olawoye, Johnson and Colosimo, and Cisero -- all played at least 26 minutes.
  • Gannon has now split four of the five season series its completed thus far, including road teams winning both games against Seton Hill, Edinboro and Cal.
  • Edinboro crept to within a game and a half of Gannon, which still sits in fifth place. Pitt-Johnstown increased its lead for fourth place and a first-round home game to two games over the Knights.
  • The Class of 2019 of the Gannon Athletics Hall of Fame was recognized at halftime before the induction ceremony Saturday night. Joining the hall are: the 1967 men's cross country team, Joanna (Fergus) Keller, Kyle Goldcamp, Carrie (Nolan) Stoczynski, Lauren (Sazama) Giles), Jerry Slocum and John Yurisinec.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will take Wednesday off before closing out its home slate next Saturday against crosstown rival Mercyhurst.
  • The 7:30 p.m. tip from the Hammermill Center will feature live video, live stats and live audio.
  • The primetime games are also senior night for both basketball teams, and the second Porreco Pride of Erie game of the season.
  • The Golden Knights hold a 54-23 lead in the all-time series against the Lakers, but Mercyhurst was able to snap a four-game losing skid against the Knights with a grueling 51-35 win at home Jan. 23.
  • The Lakers sit solidly in third place in the PSAC West standings at 17-5 (12-5 PSAC) after an 82-58 victory at home against Seton Hill Saturday afternoon. They'll face California on Wednesday before heading to Gannon.
