Gannon Grinds Out 3-0 Win Over Edinboro to Extend Win Streak

  • The Short Story: Gannon grinded out a 3-0 win over Edinboro on Thursday night in a match that had 33 tie scores and 11 lead changes. Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) each recorded a double-double in the contest.
 GAME DAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After trailing 5-2 early, Gannon battled its way back to lock the contest, 5-5, after Smith got a service ace to drop. Edinboro responded to build a four point, 15-11, edge and force a Gannon timeout. Gannon then fought back to tie the set, 18-18, following an Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) kill. The Knights used a 7-5 run to close the set and pick up the win, 25-23.
  • Both teams traded points in the second set which saw a match-high 15 tie scores and three lead changes. The Fighting Scots were able to build a 23-20 edge late in the set. The Knights responded with four straight points to regain the lead, 24-23, after a Sampson service ace. Following an Edinboro point, Gannon rattled off two quick points from Smith and Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) to win the set, 26-24.
  • The teams picked up where they left off to find themselves locked at 14-14 in the third set. The Knights then began to take control with a 4-0 run fueled by three Sampson kills to make the score 18-14. Gannon didn't look back and went on take the set, 25-21.
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon recorded its 10th straight and 18th sweep of the season.
  • The Knights 10 straight sweeps is the longest streak dating back to the 2000 season.
  • Gannon has won 30 consecutive sets during its current win streak.
  • Gannon held the edge in kills (50-40), digs (70-69) and assists (46-39).
  • Sampson recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a season-high and match-best 18 kills to go along with 10 digs. She also boasted a .410 hitting percentage.
  • Smith posted her third straight and 12th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 15 digs. She also added a team-best two service aces.
  • Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) distributed a match-high 41 assists with eight digs and three kills. She has produced at least 40 assists in 12 matches this season.
  • Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) posted a team-high 18 digs on the defensive end. She has reached double digits in digs in her last 21 matches.
