Gannon Overcomes Slow Start to Top Edinboro, 3-1

  • The Short Story: Gannon overcame a slow start to top Edinboro, 3-1, for its ninth straight win Tuesday evening. Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) led the Lady Knights with season-high 14 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro stole momentum early snatching a quick 10-7 lead to force a Gannon timeout. The Fighting Scots continued to apply pressure pushing their lead up to five, 17-12. Edinboro went on to steal the opening set, 25-22.
  • Gannon opened the second frame building a 6-2 advantage after a kill from Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder). The Lady Knights pushed their lead to 18-14 following a block by Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute). Gannon went on to even the match, 1-1, and take the set, 25-22.
  • Edinboro established an early 11-8 lead before Gannon rattled off three straight points to lock the frame, 11-11, after a service ace from Smith. Gannon went on to open up a 23-16 edge following an ace from Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central). Gannon won the third set, 25-21.
  • Gannon pulled away in the fourth set opening up a 9-3 advantage following a block from Sampson and Greenfield. Gannon then stretched its lead to double digits, 13-3, following a kill by Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington). Gannon went on to close out the frame, 25-9, and the match, 3-1.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play 6-0 for the first time since 2014 when they advanced to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.
  • As a team, Gannon held the edge in kills (49-46), assists (47-44) and digs (73-58). The Knights also posted a .230 hitting percentage.
  • Kerestes posted a team-high and season-best 14 kills to go along with a .440 hitting percentage.
  • Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) handed out a match-best 42 assists. It was her seventh time this season distributing at least 40 assists in a match.
  • Leitshuh tallied a match-best 27 digs. It marked her third straight match and seventh time this season producing at least 20 digs. 
  • Greenfield also reached double digits in kills for the third straight match with 11.  
UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues PSAC play on Thursday hosting West Chester at the Hammermill Center. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
  • Last season, Gannon edged West Chester, 3-1. The Knights lead the all-time series, 17-0.
