The Fighting Scot defense stepped up though, forcing four straight punts to say in it, then methodically moved the ball down to the Gannon 17-yard line before calling a timeout with three second left. Vicente Arriagada drilled a 35-yard field goal as the clock hit zeros to give Edinboro the thrilling win. HOW IT HAPPENED Edinboro got off to just about as good of a start as a team can, forcing a fumble and getting a safety on the game's opening kickoff. The Scots looked to break it open after the ensuing free kick, moving the whole way to the Gannon 5, but a Malachi Woody (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian Academy) stuffed the 1st and goal run for a loss, and tackles from Malik Bridgeman (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga College HS), Aaron Webb (Baltimore, Md./Franklin), Keith Thompson (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) and Andrew Berger (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) closed out a goal-line stand to keep it 2-0. The guests forced a fumble on the next Gannon possession, but the Golden Knight defense, as it has all year, stepped up when it need to, allowing Edinboro to move just 14 yards in 12 plays to force a field goal attempt, which Arriagada converted from 46 yards to make it a 5-0 game with 5:02 left in the opening frame. A chunk play from Bransen Stanley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) on a pass from Jimmy Keefe (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/St. Edward) got the Gannon offense moving after a 32-yard return from Jaylen Johnson (Largo, Md./National Christian Academy), and Keefe found Sam East (Jackson Township, N.J./Saint John Vianney) in the back corner of the end zone to put the Knights ahead 7-5 just two and half minutes later. The defense kept its momentum going through much of the second quarter, not allowing Edinboro to get past its own 30 on the next two drives. A.J. Satcher (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) stepped in front of a pass to pick up an interception, and returned it 21 yards to the Edinboro 33. Gannon got a first down, but faced a fourth down at the 16 before Eric Scarpino (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) threaded a 34-yard field goal, bringing the score to 10-5. Edinboro running back Dorian Woody slipped off some decent runs to move the ball into Gannon territory when the Fighting Scots got the ball back, and the guests pushed a field goal wide left before getting second life when the Knights were called for leaping the line on the kick. Arriagada hit his second chance from 25 yards to cut it to 10-8, and although Gannon got down to the Edinboro 27 shortly before the half, a holding call pushed them back and kept it at a two-point game at the break. A three-and-out from the Gannon defense to start the third quarter turned into a quick drive for the offense to extend the lead. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Edinboro pushed the gall near midfield, and Gomez, who made his first career start, ripped off a 49-yard touchdown run down the right sideline to give the Knights the biggest lead of the day at 17-8. A short field let the visitors get into field goal position again, but Jay Bullock (Garfield Heights, Ohio/University School) blocked his second kick in as many weeks to get the ball back in his offense's hands with 5:28 left in the third. Gomez got the ball moving a bit for the Knights, but a tackle for a loss and an incompletion forced another punt. Three straight completions covering 74 yards for the Fighting Scots was capped by a four-yard toss for their only touchdown with 40 seconds left in the period. A 31-yard back-shoulder fade from Keefe to Cox pushed the ball into Edinboro territory on the next drive, but the Scots buckled down to force another punt. The two sides then traded three-and-outs before Jayden Ashby (Kensington, Md./The Avalon School) corralled an interception, but a pair of sacks kept the hosts from sustaining a drive. Punts forced again by both defenses ended up with Edinboro with the ball at the Gannon 46 and 3:02 to play. Plays of 10, 7 and 8 yards on the first three snaps moved the ball to the 21, and a tough pass interference call on the Knights didn't amount to much yardage, but allowed the Scots to burn more clock. Three runs followed by timeouts by either team set the ball up in the middle of the field for the game-winning kick. GAME NOTES The two defenses held their opposing offenses to just 615 combined total yards. Last week's game against Clarion featured both teams eclipsing 500 yards. Gomez, making his first career start, finished with 98 rushing yards on 19 carries and added two catches for 14 yards. It's the fourth straight game a Gannon running back picked up over 100 all-purpose yards, and the fourth consecutive game its lead back averaged better than five yards per carry. Gannon recorded two more interceptions on Saturday, and have picked off 11 passes through five games. Satcher and Ashby each snagged their third of the season. Stanley, a true freshman, set highs in his short career with four catches and 69 yards. The Gannon defense finished with 11 tackles for loss, its highest mark of the season. Thompson, Nick White (Randallstown, Md./Milford Mill Academy) and Bullock each finished with two. UP NEXT Gannon hits the road for a trip to Seton Hill next week. Live video, live stats and live audio will be available for the 4 p.m. kickoff at Offutt Field. The Fighting Scots fell to 0-4 on the season after suffering a 42-16 defeat on the road at Clarion Saturday. Gannon is a perfect 6-0 against the Griffins all-time, picking up a 48-28 win last season.
