 GAME DAY MEDIA CENTER Quotable

"It's a tough loss for us tonight, but Shepherd was simply better and played harder, with more desperation," Head coach Matt Darling said. "I didn't have us ready for that, unfortunately.  My hat is off to them and their coaches, who got it right tonight."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rams jumped out to a 9-3 lead to force a Gannon timeout. Shepherd then stretched its lead to nine, 18-9. The Lady Knights cut the deficit down to six, 18-12, after three straight kills. However, Gannon couldn't cut the lead down any further and went on to drop the set, 25-19.
  • Gannon pushed back in the second frame doubling up Shepherd, 10-5, following a service ace from Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson). The Knights then expanded their lead to 16-8 after a service error and Sampson kill. Gannon went on to take the second set, 25-18.
  • Both teams exchanged points to open the third frame and find themselves deadlocked, 7-7. Gannon then erupted for a 6-0 run featuring two kills from Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) to put the Knights in front, 12-7. The Knights then went on to hold off the Rams and pick up the win, 25-15.
  • Shepherd fought back in the fourth set creating an early four point edge, 10-6. Following a kill from Sampson later in the frame, the Rams rattled off four straight points to increase their lead to seven, 14-7. Shepherd went on to take the set, 25-12.
  • In the deciding fifth frame, Gannon opened up an early 7-3 lead. Shepherd then responded with a 4-1 run to lock the frame, 8-8. The Rams continued to apply pressure and opened up a late two point edge, 13-11. Shepherd went on to close out the frame, 15-12, and the match, 3-2.
