KEY SEQUENCE
  • A Millersville side that entered winners of four straight got off to an equally fast start in the game, netting the first four baskets before Gannon was able to attempt a field goal, going up 8-0 in the first three minutes. After Gannon got its first points from Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), the Marauders ripped off another eight straight points to build a 16-2 lead that led to a comfortable lead for the rest of the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Knights were able to settle in a bit from there though, hitting five of their next nine shots. DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) brought an end to the run with a slice down the baseline for a basket, and Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) started a 9-2 run with a 3-pointer from the right wing. Another layup from Porter and two out of Dodds made it 20-13 with 7:20 to go in the half.
  • A Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) triple cut the lead to seven once again two minutes later, and Kofi Mills (London, England/Martin Van Buren (N.Y.)) worked inside for a layup and followed a minute later with a pair of free throws to get the Knights to within five at 25-20 with less than 90 seconds to go in the period. Millersville recorded the final five points of the half to go to the locker room with a 10-point lead.
  • Dodds got the second-half scoring going with a basket to make it an 11-point game less than two minutes in, but the Marauders snapped an 0-for-8 start from beyond the arc with a pair of 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to quickly make it a 41-22 lead.
  • More work from Dodds, including muscling through a foul for a layup and a slick spin move for another basket, helped the Knights stick around. In between those two buckets came a lofted inbounds pass from Johnson to Porter, who tipped it in to make it 45-32 as the clock ticked under 12 minutes to play.
  • Two straight layups from Johnson and Cisero cut the lead to 11, the smallest in nearly 10 minutes, at 47-36 with 9:28 to go, but five straight points were capped by a Millersville 3-pointer that drew a timeout and made it 52-36.
  • Another spurt from Cisero and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) netted four points and got it to 12, and Gannon held the hosts without a field goal for the final seven-plus minutes of the game, but Millersville did just enough defensively to hold on.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's game was counted as a conference game for Millersville, but not for the Golden Knights. The quirk in the schedule was due to Cheyney dropping out of the league prior to this season, and the imbalance that caused in the PSAC West's crossover schedules.
  • Gannon held Millersville nearly 24 points under its season scoring average. The Marauders' previous low scoring output was 63 against West Chester.
  • The Knights also harassed the hosts into 19 turnovers, their most in their past seven games and one shy of the most Millersville has turned it over in a game this season.
  • Dodds led Gannon with a career-high 14 points, shooting 7-of-14 from the field and adding six rebounds and two steals.
  • Cisero recorded double-digit points for the first time since the IUP game on Jan. 2, going for 12 points in just 15 minutes of game action.
  • Johnson pulled in a career-high seven rebounds to lead the Knights, adding that to his seven points, four assists, one steal and one block.
UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns home to close out the first half of its PSAC West slate against Slippery Rock Wednesday.
  • The 7:30 p.m. tip from the Hammermill Center will feature live video, live stats and live audio.
  • The Golden Knights hold a 30-16 lead in the all-time series against the Rock after going 2-1 against them last season. Gannon won two close games in the span of five days last year, topping SRU on Senior Day then turning around for a 77-70 win in the PSAC quarterfinals.
  • Slippery Rock sits at 14-5 (11-1 PSAC) after an 88-71 victory at Edinboro Saturday afternoon, and are one of the hottest teams in the country, winning 12 straight.
