Gannon Softball Snaps Lock Haven’s 14-Game Win Streak; Stuns Bald Eagles in PSAC Semifinals, 7-3

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Gannon 7, Lock Haven 3

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team halted Lock Haven's 14-game win streak Friday afternoon with a 7-3 victory in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament semifinals. The win advances the Lady Knights to the PSAC championship game for the second time in four years.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With two outs in the top of the first, Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) scored Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) on a hard hit back to the pitcher to give Gannon an early 1-0 lead.
  • Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) put the Lady Knights up 2-0 with her first career homer to left center in the second inning.
  • Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) smacked her first homer of the season the next at-bat to make it 3-0.
  • In the bottom of the second, Smith snagged a laser line-drive at first base and sprinted back to the base to get the double-play.
  • Wilp scored DeMatteis and Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) with a bouncing single up the middle in the third. Ingerick drove home Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic), who pinch-ran for Wilp, with a double to right center to give Gannon a 6-0 lead.
  • With Lock Haven runners on second and third, Tanilli got the Lady Knights out of the third inning with a caught foul-ball in right field.
  • Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) extended Gannon's lead to 7-0 in the fourth with a single up the middle, scoring Tanilli from second base.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Lock Haven's Amanda Loar smacked a solo-home run to left center, her second of the season.
  • LHU's Bryann Hilty drove home Moriah Lindsey with a single to center field in the sixth inning. Madison Mathes gave the Bald Eagles another run two batters later with an RBI single to left field. Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) got the Lady Knights out of a two-on jam with a fly out to left field.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) came in to pitch the seventh inning. She sat down three of her four batters faced to secure Gannon's 7-3 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Wilp led Gannon with two hits and three RBI. Friday was Wilp's 12th multiple-hit game and third multi-RBI game of the year. 
  • Tanilli also had two hits, recording her 10th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Gannon out-hit Lock Haven, 11-7.
  • Nine Lady Knights registered hits in the win.
  • Five Lady Knights recorded an RBI.
  • Lock Haven committed two errors, while Gannon had one.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) improved to 13-5 on the year in the circle. She fanned two batters and scattered seven hits across six innings.
  • Ke. DeMatteis pitched one hitless inning of relief.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon will be making its second PSAC championship game appearance in four years.
  • Gannon will be trying to win its first-ever PSAC Tournament championship.
  • Lock Haven was ranked No. 3 in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional, while Gannon was tabbed fourth.
  • The Lady Knights have defeated the region's second-ranked team (West Chester), third-ranked team (Lock Haven) and the defending PSAC Champs (West Chester) in three days.
  • Wilp's homer was her first of the season and third of her career.
  • Smith's home run was the first of her career.
  • Friday was Gannon's 19th game with at least one home run this season and 11th game with more than one homer.
  • Gannon has registered 35 homers, which is the second-most in the PSAC. 
  • The Gannon defense has only allowed 11 homers, which is the best in the conference. 
  • Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) increased her on-base streak to 21 games, while her hit-streak extended to 10 games.
