ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon junior varsity baseball team is off to a hot 3-0 start despite numerous postponements and cancellations due to the poor spring weather in the northeast part of the country.
Gannon opened the season with an 8-3 victory against Fredonia State at McConnell Family Stadium on April 28. Freshman David Ariza earned the season-opening win on the mound. Offensively, redshirt senior Robert Pieszak almost had a cycle while going 3-for-4 with a single, double and home run. Freshman Ryan Kalbfus went 2-for-3 with a double.
The Golden Knights followed with a 7-1 victory against Lakeland Community College at McConnell Family Stadium on April 10. Junior Alex Dobry picked up the pitching win as the squad used a bullpen schedule with numerous pitchers seeing action. Pieszak finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Freshman Tyler Mattocks generated two hits in three at-bats.
Gannon then posted a 10-3 rain-shortened victory at Thiel on April 11. Redshirt freshman Eric Sapp tossed three scoreless innings, before the game was stopped in the fourth inning. Sophomore Austin O'Shei was perfect in three plate appearances. Kalbfus finished 2-for-3 while junior Konar Smith ripped a double.
The Golden Knights return to action Thursday, April 19 against Niagara County Community College at McConnell Family Stadium. The doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
