HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon never trailed during Wednesday's contest, beginning with an opening 8-3 run. After senior Jair Green (Williamstown, N.J./Paul VI) converted a lay-up on the Golden Knights' opening possession, Miraud ripped off the other six points.
  • California (Pa.) responded with a 7-2 run to tie the contest at 10, but it proved to be the final tie of the night.
  • Leading 14-12, Gannon scored eight consecutive points to push its lead into double digits at 22-12 midway through the first half.
  • Three different Golden Knights scored during the run, led by senior Gerrell Williams (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview)' four points.
  • California (Pa.) managed to draw within 24-20, but Gannon responded with consecutive baskets by Green, Miraud and senior Zay Jackson (Queens, N.Y./Westside) to push the lead back to 10 with 4:42 remaining in the first half.
  • The Vulcans countered with back-to-back triples by Cordell Smith and eventually went to halftime trailing 38-33.
  • Cal cut the deficit further after the break, slicing within 40-38 during the opening two minutes of the second half.
  • Gannon took control for good at that point, erupting for eight straight points. Jackson and junior Evan Phoenix (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) split the points, pushing the home team's lead to 48-38 at the 15:19 mark.
  • The Golden Knights slowly built their advantage to 14 points (56-42) at the 11:52 mark, 16 points (60-44) at the 9:50 mark and a game-high 17 points (64-47) at the 7:11 mark.
  • California (Pa.) managed to cut the deficit to nine points twice during the final 90 seconds, before Gannon settled for a 74-63 victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon clinched its fifth PSAC Tournament berth in the last six years with Wednesday's victory.

UP NEXT

  • Gannon has won five of its last six games at the McComb Fieldhouse and holds a 28-22 all-time record on the Fighting Scots' home floor.
