GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
KEY SEQUENCE
  • Down by 15 with eight minutes to play in the first half, the Golden Knights reeled off a 21-6 run to end the period tied with the Cardinals, getting 11 points from Cyril Ogbuagu (Lagos, Nigeria/Riverdale Baptist (Md.)) during that stretch. Gannon blew by Jesuit in the second half to kick off the 2018-19 season with a win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon led for much of the first four minutes of the game, but Wheeling Jesuit began building momentum when they went ahead for the first time at the 16:01 mark. The lead grew to 11 before layups from Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Kofi Mills (London, England/Martin Van Buren (N.Y.)) cut it to seven, but the Cardinals pushed it back out to 15 with eight straight from there.
  • Fernando Salsamendi (Curitiba-Parana, Brazil/Circulo Militar do Parana) got the response started with a bucket with 7:41 to go in the half, and that started a 12-0 burst for the Knights. Ogbuagu converted a three-point play, and Jovante Lee (Dothan, Ala./Northview) netted five straight to quickly make it 30-27 in less than four minutes.
  • A 3-pointer from Lee slashed it to a two-point game, and his steal got out to Ogbuagu, whose jumper put Gannon back in front 33-32. A few free throws by each side made it 36-all heading into the break.
  • Wheeling Jesuit seemed ready to repeat its successful portion of the first half as the second half got underway. The Cardinal lead shot to four just two minutes in, and slowly build to six before a three-point play from Lee cut that in half with 15:10 on the clock.
  • A Fustine basket coming out of a time out cut it to a two-point game, and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) buried a 3-pointer to give the Golden Knights another lead at 52-51. Mills converted an and-1 to break a tie with 12:02 left, and Gannon would lead the rest of the way.
  • Layups from Olawoye and Mills stretched the lead to 10 for the first time for the Knights with under three minutes to play, and that ballooned to 15 by the final horn.

GAME NOTES
  • Four Golden Knights finished in double figures to open the season, with Lee netting 21 on 7-of-11 shooting, and Mills adding 17 on a perfect 8-for-8 night from the floor.
  • Fustine pulled in a game-high eight rebounds, and Gannon won the rebounding battle 43-20, the 13th straight game they've outrebounded their opponents.
  • Gannon had one of its best shooting nights in years to kick off the season, converting on 64.2 percent of their field goal attempts. It's the first time they've cracked the 60-percent threshold since Feb. 23, 2013.
  • The win snapped a three-game skid against Wheeling Jesuit. The Golden Knights now hold a 5-3 advantage in the all-time series.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon makes a quick turnaround to take on host Shepherd Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
  • Live video, live stats and live audio will be available.
  • The Rams were 81-73 winners over Millersville Friday, getting 20-plus points from three different players.
