Top-Seeded Gannon Rolls Past ESU in Straight Sets; Will Host PSAC Women’s Volleyball Final Four This Weekend

THE RUNDOWN

  • Set Scores: 25-22, 25-17, 25-15
  • Records: Gannon (29-1, 17-1 PSAC), East Stroudsburg (20-11, 10-8 PSAC)

  • The Short Story: Top-seeded Gannon women's volleyball made quick work of visiting East Stroudsburg on Tuesday night, defeating the Warriors in straight sets in front of an energized Hammermill Center crowd in the PSAC Quarterfinals. The 21st-ranked Lady Knights, now 29-1 overall, have won 18 consecutive matches and Tuesday's victory over ESU avenges their only loss during the 2018 campaign. Gannon will host the PSAC Final Four this upcoming weekend, with the semifinals and championship game taking place inside the Hammermill Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon began its PSAC Tournament run with a potent offensive attack for an early 8-2 lead to begin the first set. Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha), Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) each fired in kills while Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) added an ace in the Lady Knights' early onslaught.
  • After an East Stroudsburg service error, Gannon added two more points off an ace from Smith and a kill from Sampson for a 12-4 first set lead. The Warriors clawed back with a mini run of their own to cut the Gannon lead to 15-11.
  • Gannon countered with four out of the next five points for a 19-12 lead in the first set. Kills from Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) and Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) handed the Lady Knights a 22-16 lead before the Warriors stormed back, cutting the Gannon advantage to just one at 23-22. The Lady Knights ultimately scored the final two points of the set for a 25-22 set one victory.
  • Gannon once again got out to an early lead in the second set, storming ahead 6-2. Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) notched three consecutive service aces to cap the early run for Gannon. ESU stayed within striking distance for most of the second set, however, cutting the Lady Knights lead to 17-16. Once again Gannon responded with a big offensive surge, outscoring the Warriors 8-1 to close the second set with a 25-17 victory for a 2-0 match lead.
  • The Lady Knights got out in front early in the third set, outscoring the Warriors by a 5-0 margin. McClung and Sampson each put down kills in the early portions of the set. Gannon strung together an 8-0 run in the middle portion of the third set, highlighted by two kills from Smith and two aces from Valeria Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame), for a 15-4 lead.
  • Two kills from Kerestes and an ace from Smith gave Gannon the final three points of the third set for a 25-15 victory.
