KEY SEQUENCE
  • A short burst by Fairmont State to close the second quarter took some of the wind out of the sails of Gannon, which had shot back to take the lead late in the half but would trail by a point at halftime. That didn't seem to faze the Lady Knights coming back out of the locker room though, as they ripped off a 17-3 run to start the third quarter, getting 10 points from Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) during the stretch, to build a 45-32 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A tight game for the first seven minutes, the Falcons held on to a lead early before Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) buried a 3-pointer with four minutes left in the opening quarter to give the Knights a 9-8 advantage. The hosts reeled off nine of the next 10 points though, shooting out to a 17-10 lead with 2:18 still left in the period.
  • A Sam Pirosko (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) layup off a feed from Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) got the Lady Knights' first-half run underway, and a Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) triple with just over a minute to go in the first half quickly made it a one-possession game again. Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) broke a long defensive stalemate to start the second quarter with a 3-pointer to push Gannon in front 20-19 at the 6:05 mark.
  • A 6-0 spurt, with three points each from Tewes and Rourke, put the guests in front 28-24 with 1:04 left in the half, but the Falcons used four free throws in the final 47 seconds of the half to take a slim 29-28 lead into the locker room.
  • It didn't take long for the momentum to swing back the other way coming out of the locker room though. Rourke hit a 3-pointer on the Knights' first shot of the second half to key the 17-3 run. Gannon shot 7-of-12 during that stretch, which lasted nearly seven minutes, and didn't turn the ball over a single time.
  • Fairmont trimmed the lead back down to eight at 45-37, but another seven straight by the Lady Knights to close the third quarter, capped by a steal and score from Obenrader, quickly made it 52-37.
  • The Gannon lead remained in double digits the rest of the way. A 3-pointer from Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) made it a 16-point game early in the fourth, and scores late by Tewes and Obenrader made the advantage as large as 19.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon moves to 3-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
  • Rourke turned in a career-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting. The junior is averaging 17.0 points per game, and has converted her field goal attempts at a 61.1-percent clip.
  • The Lady Knights continue to share the ball. After having six and four different players score in double figures in their first two games, five different Knights netted at least eight points Wednesday. Obenrader set a new high in her young career with 15 points, while LaCava added 13 and Tewes and Pirosko eight each.
  • Wednesday's matchup with Fairmont State is the only scheduled regular season contest against an opponent from the Mountain East Conference this season for Gannon.
  • The Lady Knights move to 7-1 all-time against the Falcons. The two teams' last meeting came in the NCAA Atlantic Region tournament in 2012-13.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns home Saturday, November 17 for a non-conference matchup with Bowie State at 1 p.m.
  • Live stats, live video and live audio will be available from the Hammermill Center.
  • The Lady Knights hold a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with Bowie State. The two squads will meet for the first time since the 2012-13 campaign.
