Gannon Men's Basketball Team Rolls Past Millersville 86-60; Extends Win Streak to Nine (Video)



THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon men's basketball team shot 64.3 percent (18-28) during the first 20 minutes en route to a 44-26 halftime lead and rolled to an 86-60 victory against Millersville Saturday afternoon during the 11th Annual Pink Zone doubleheader at the Hammermill Center. The decision extended the Golden Knights' win streak to nine.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite an early 7-2 Gannon lead, the two teams battled on even terms during the opening nine minutes.
  • Leading 23-18, the Golden Knights pulled away with an 11-0 run. Redshirt sophomore Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) ignited the blitz with a lay-up while being fouled. Seniors Jair Green (Williamstown, N.J./Paul VI) and Zay Jackson (Queens, N.Y./Westside) followed with baskets, before junior Evan Phoenix (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) added a field goal and two free throws for a 34-18 advantage with 5:38 left in the first half.
  • The Gannon defense held Millersville without a point for three minutes and 15 seconds during the aforementioned run.
  • Gannon grabbed its biggest lead of the first half at 44-25 after Green nailed a triple with 54 ticks left.
  • Millersville added a free throw with 30 seconds remaining, before Gannon went into the intermission with a 44-26 lead.
  • The Golden Knights put the game away during the opening 10 minutes of the second half. An early 9-0 run pushed the difference to 56-30 at the 16:32 mark. Senior Damon Miraud (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) accounted for the first five points, including a lay-up while being fouled to start the stretch. Phoenix and Jackson followed with lay-ups to cap the run.
  • Gannon later held a game-best 34-point lead twice at the 8:26 and 7:50 time slots.
  • Millersville was never able to get closer than 26 points the rest of the way, before the Golden Knights posted an 86-60 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Green led a Gannon double-digit quartet with 16 points and five rebounds, leading the Golden Knights in scoring for the sixth time this season.
  • Webb Jr. posted career-highs in points (13) and rebounds (5), hitting 6-of-7 field goal attempts.
  • Miraud also had 13 points with perfect 5-of-5 shooting to go along with four rebounds.
  • Senior Gerrell Williams (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) came off the bench to produced 12 points with a 5-of-8 chart in 18 minutes.
  • Sophomore Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) had a career-high eight assists and no turnovers in 13 minutes at point guard.
  • Gannon shot 55.9 percent (33-59) from the field, 25 percent (3-12) from three-point range and 77.3 percent (17-22) from the free throw line. 
  • Marcus Adkison topped the Millersville scoring chart with 19 points.
  • D'Marco Suggs and James Sullivan added 10 points each.
  • Millersville shot 38.5 percent (20-52) from the floor, 30 percent (6-20) from behind the arc and 73.7 percent (14-19) from the charity stripe.
  • Gannon generated large advantages in bench points (41-14), fastbreak points (22-2), points off turnovers (20-6) and points in the paint (48-24).
  • All 15 Golden Knights in uniform saw playing time with 10 scoring, 13 grabbing a rebound and eight dishing out an assist.
  • Gannon out-rebounded Millersvillle 42-20, including a 12-4 edge on the offensive glass.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Saturday's game was part of Gannon's 11th Annual Pink Zone Doubleheader. The event honors and recognizes breast cancer survivors, as well as educates about breast cancer while helping raise funds for breast cancer research and those affected by the disease.
  • The Gannon women's basketball team raised $9,313 as a result of last year's Pink Zone with all generated funds staying local.
  • The first 10 Pink Zone games and related fundraising activities have successfully raised $132,422 to join in the fight against breast cancer.
  • Gannon extended its win streak to nine games, matching its longest win streak since the 2008-09 NCAA Division II Elite Eight team won 12 straight February 14-March 17, 2009.
  • The Golden Knights improved to 11-1 when leading at halftime and 10-1 when reaching the 70-point plateau.
  • Gannon is now 120-9 when scoring at least 80 points during the last 15 seasons, including an 83-7 mark under head coach John T. Reilly.
  • The Golden Knights out-rebounded their opponent for the 11th straight contest and 17th time in 18 games. It marks the first time the program has been the best rebounding team in 11 consecutive games since doing so 20 straight times November 20, 2013-February 1, 2014.
  • Gannon held its opponent under 70 points for the 17th consecutive game. It represents the longest such streak since doing so for 17 games December 3-February 7, 2009.
  • Millersville entered the contest with a 78.5 scoring average, but was held 18.5 points below its norm.
  • Gannon out-rebounded its opponent by double digits for the eighth time this season and sixth time during the last nine contests.
  • The Golden Knights' 55.9 shooting percentage was their best since shooting 56.9 percent during an 80-60 victory at Clarion on February 11, 2017.
  • Gannon dished out at least 20 assists for the fourth time in the last five games.
  • The Golden Knights generated a rebounding margin of plus-20 or more for the fourth time this season.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon heads out on the road Wednesday, January 24 for an important PSAC Western Division clash at Slippery Rock.
  • Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
  • The Golden Knights currently hold down second place in the division, but the Rock is only one-half game behind.
