HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded punches during the opening five minutes while battling through ties at two, four, six, eight and 10.
  • Gannon moved in front 13-10 with a lay-up and free throw from Phoenix, but Clarion roared back with 10 straight points to assume a 20-13 lead with 11:16 remaining in the first half.
  • The Golden Knights countered with five consecutive points after a lay-up from junior Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western) and old-fashion three-point play from Miraud.
  • Clarion maintained a small advantage for the next couple minutes until a mini 6-0 Gannon run switched the leader. Phoenix converted another old-fashion three-point play, before a fastbreak dunk by senior Jair Green (Williamstown, N.J./Paul VI) gave the Golden Knights a 27-26 lead at the 8:05 mark.
  • A Green three-pointer later gave Gannon its largest lead of the half at 31-27.
  • After a pair of ties during the final two minutes, redshirt sophomore Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) went coast to coast in five seconds to convert a lay-up at the buzzer and give the Golden Knights a 35-33 lead at the intermission.
  • Clarion forged another tie with the opening basket of the second half, but Gannon took control after that.
  • The Golden Knights scored seven consecutive points. Senior Zay Jackson (Queens, N.Y./Westside) started the run with a jumper and ended it with a three-pointer.
  • Moments later, another 7-0 run pushed the Gannon lead to 49-37 with 15:29 to play. Three different Golden Knights scored during the stretch, topped by Green's four points. In all, it was a 14-2 blitz over the span of three minutes and 49 seconds.
  • Clarion held the Gannon surge off momentarily after that, but a three-pointer by Green and lay-up by Miraud pushed the visitor's advantage to 59-42 with 12:21 remaining.
  • Gannon extended its lead into the 20's after baskets from Webb Jr. and Green sandwiched a Jackson free throw. The spurt gave the Golden Knights a 67-47 edge with 8:53 showing on the clock.
  • The series of mini-runs equaled a 32-14 run during the opening 11 minutes and seven seconds of the second half.
  • Gannon grabbed its biggest lead of the afternoon at 80-54 with 4:29 left to play after a three-pointer by Green and lay-up by Jackson.
