  • Location: Erie, Pa. - Tullio Field

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards on six plays for an early 7-0 lead 2:37 into the contest.
  • Gannon matched the score with redshirt senior Tyler Palka (Temperance, Mich./Saline)'s three-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Three of the five plays on the drive went for double-digit yards, highlighted by redshirt freshman Jimmy Keefe (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/St. Edward)'s 30-yard pass to redshirt freshman Jordan Smith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillian).
  • The visitors grabbed what eventually proved to be its only lead of the afternoon early in the second quarter. A 10-play drive started in the first quarter and ended with a 23-yard field goal by senior Karch Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) 48 seconds into the second frame.
  • Mercyhurst regained the lead for good late in the first half. After a missed 44-yard field goal, the Lakers went 74 yards on only three plays. The possession started with a 33-yard pass and concluded with a 42-yard touchdown completion. A blocked extra point left the Mercyhurst lead at 13-10 with 3:46 left in the first half.
  • A key turn of events took place in the waning minutes of the second quarter. Junior Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton)'s punt with 1:09 showing on the clock touched a Mercyhurst player and was recovered by the Golden Knights at the Lakers' 39-yard line.
  • Gannon immediately went deep on the next play, but Mercyhurst intercepted the pass and return the ball 38 yards. A personal foul was then tacked on to the play and put the Lakers at the Gannon 45-yard line.
  • The home squad then completed a 43-yard pass on the next play and scored two plays later. A two-point conversion sent the Lakers into halftime with a 21-10 advantage.
  • Gannon scored the only points of the third quarter when junior Marc Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) powered his way into the end zone from three yards out with 2:51 left in the period. It capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive that included seven rushes. A two-point conversion failed, leaving the deficit at 21-16.
  • Mercyhurst immediately responded with a 22-yard field goal during its next drive to grab a 24-16 edge with 12:06 to play.
  • Gannon counterpunched with a 10-play, 88-yard drive that found pay dirt. Big plays included a 27-yard pass from Keefe to redshirt sophomore Nico Law (Monroeville, Pa./Ringgold) and 45-yard jaunt by Jones to the Mercyhurst four-yard line. Three plays later, Keefe found redshirt sophomore Dontae Owens (Reading, Pa./Reading) for a 10-yard touchdown connection on third-and-goal. However, the two-point conversion failed again to leave the Gannon behind 24-22 midway through the final quarter.
  • Mercyhurst ate 6:20 off the clock with its next possession, but Gannon regained possession after stuffing a third-and-one quarterback sneak and forcing an incomplete pass on fourth down.
  • Starting the decisive possession at its 24-yard line, Gannon was unable to move the ball and went four-and-out.
  • Mercyhurst then ran out the final 66 seconds to remain in control of the Niagara Cup.
