Turnovers Lead to Road Setback at Bloomsburg for Gannon Football Team

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: at Bloomsburg 27, Gannon 10
  • Records: Gannon (1-2), Bloomsburg (2-1)
  • Location: Bloomsburg, Pa. - Redman Stadium
  • The Short Story: The Bloomsburg football team scored 13 points after four Gannon turnovers and added another touchdown after the Golden Knights failed to convert a fourth-and-two en route to a 27-10 victory Saturday afternoon at Redman Stadium. The setback dampened another huge rushing game for junior Marc Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) who produced 173 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon drove to the Bloomsburg 34-yard line during its opening drive with redshirt freshman Jimmy Keefe (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/St. Edward) under center for his first career start. However after picking up three first downs, an incomplete pass on fourth-and-two ended the drive.
  • Bloomsburg needed only three plays after that to reach the end zone. The big play was a 57-yard completion from Chris Palubinsky to Jay Popson that took the Huskies to Gannon's six-yard line. Qmac Quiteh chewed up the remaining yards on the next play for a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
  • Gannon followed with a three-and-out, before an interception during its next possession set up a Bloomsburg field goal and 10-0 deficit early in the second quarter.
  • Gannon gained some traction during its next drive, marching 59 yards on eight plays. After Keefe hit redshirt senior Tyler Palka (Temperance, Mich./Saline) for 47 yards on the first play, Jones followed with five consecutive rushes for 18 yards. A sack on third down the forced senior Karch Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) to boot a 30-yard field goal for the Golden Knights' first points at the 9:54 mark of the second quarter.
  • After forcing a Bloomsburg punt, the visitors appeared to be closing in on a tie. A 30-yard run by Jones put Gannon inside Bloomsburg territory. But on the next play, Chris Gary returned a fumble 55 yards for a touchdown and a 17-3 Huskie lead with 5:10 remaining in the first half.
  • Gannon failed on another fourth-down conversion during its next drive, before Bloomsburg ran out the clock and took a 14-point lead into the break.
  • The Golden Knights continued to fight and clawed within 17-10 after three quarters. The squad scored the only points of the third frame when Jones scored from six yards out with 29 seconds showing on the clock. The points were set up by a freshman Romell Jones (Woodbridge, Va./Brentsville District)' 28-yard interception return to the Huskies' 11-yard line.
  • That was as close as Gannon could get the rest of the way. Bloomsburg clinched the victory with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Palubinsky to Michael Allen with 7:26 to play and 36-yard field goal from Ryan Abbott with 53 ticks left on the clock.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's contest concluded Gannon's early-season Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover games.
  • Bloomsburg finished with advantages in first downs (16-14), passing yards (212-169), total yards (334-321) and time of possession (33:33-26:27).
  • Gannon countered with an edge in rushing yards (152-122).
  • The Golden Knights committed four turnovers for the second consecutive week while the Huskies had one.
  • Jones remained red hot with 173 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries.
  • Keefe finished 15-of-27 for 169 yards through the air.
  • Palka was the top aerial target, hauling in six passes for 90 yards.
  • Junior Anthony Howard (Temple Hills, Md./Bishop O'Connell) led the Gannon defensive unit for the third consecutive week with 12 tackles, four tackles for a loss and two sacks.
  • Redshirt junior Martell Davis (Columbus, Ohio/Licking Heights) was close behind with 11 stops.
  • Fellow redshirt juniors Geremy Paige (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) and James Simms (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) added eight and seven tackles, respectively.
  • The two teams combined to convert only five of 24 third-down chances.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Bloomsburg avenged a 30-27 overtime loss at McConnell Family Stadium last year when tailback Tyler Johnson (North East, Pa./North East) recovered a fumble in the end zone for the victory.
  • Jones produced his third consecutive 100-yard rushing performance and fourth in 14 games as a Golden Knight. He is the third Gannon player in program history to open a season with three consecutive 100-yard games. Brock Jones performed the feat during each of the first four games in 2014 while Jon Richardson did it in the first three contests of 2009.
  • Howard has reached double digits in tackles during all three contests this season.
  • Gannon produced season-highs in sacks (3), tackles for a loss (8) and pass break-ups (4).
  • Bloomsburg's 14 completions were the fewest by a Gannon opponent this season.
  • Gannon has turned the ball over 11 times during the first three games compared to only four takeaways.
  • Senior Karch Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) moved past Darmel Whitfield (2001-04) and Brock Jones (2012-15) en route to second place on Gannon's all-time scoring chart with 211 career points. He also tied Brendan McNicholas (2003-06) for second place all-time at Gannon with 27 career field goals.
  • Jones has already surpassed his entire 2016 rushing production during the first three games. The PSAC's leading rusher has 524 rushing yards this season, equaling the most by a Golden Knight during the first three games of a season since at least 1998.
  • Keefe made his collegiate debut with a starting assignment at quarterback.
  • Howard set career-highs in sacks (2) and tackles for a loss (4).
  • Romell Jones (Woodbridge, Va./Brentsville District) recorded his first career interception during the third quarter.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon opens PSAC Western Division play against Slippery Rock on Saturday, September 23 at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • Game time is scheduled for 12 noon.
  • The Rock was picked to finish third in the PSAC West according to the league's preseason poll.
  • Slippery Rock has won the last three games in the series, but is only 1-3 at McConnell Family Stadium since Gannon joined the PSAC.
