Gannon Softball Clinches PSAC Tournament Berth With Victory at California (Pa.)

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: Gannon Softball won its second game against California (Pa.) this season on Friday (April 28). The Lady Knights took a 7-3 decision which also clinched a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament berth.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • The Gannon Lady Knights' offense was having success early in game one. Gannon scored in each of its first five frames against the Lady Vulcans.
  • Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) grabbed her first RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning that scored Allie Salerno (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg). The Lady Knights led 1-0.
  • Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) put another run on the board in the second inning after a one-out double plated Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) from second base.
  • The third inning saw Tanilli back in on the scoring action with solo-shot to left field that cleared the fence. Gannon led 3-0.
  • The Lady Knights hung a three-spot on the Lady Vulcans in the fourth to extend the lead. Two runners were on for Tanilli who punched a double to left-center, scoring Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) and Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township).
  • Gannon led 6-1 after the top of four but California (Pa.) wasn't throwing in the towel. The Lady Vulcans rallied for two in the bottom of the inning to inch closer at 6-3.
  • The Lady Knights seventh and final run came in the top of the fifth. With Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) on second base, Salerno singled up the middle to bring Szajn home.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) came in to pitch in the bottom of the fifth after Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) pitched the first four innings. Gumbita left as the winning pitcher after giving up just three unearned runs.
  • Beining only allowed two hits over the final three innings, picking up her second save of the season.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Tanilli had a career-best game going 2-for-3 with a home run and double, collecting four RBI's along the way.
  • Gumbita picked up her 14th pitching victory of the season, while Beining got the save for pitching the final three innings.
  • Salerno had a 3-for-5 game with a run scored and batted in.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon earned a PSAC tournament spot with the victory over California (Pa.).
  • The Lady Knights will head to their seventh-straight PSAC tournament dating back to 2011.
  • It's only the second time the Lady Knights have beaten California (Pa.) twice in the same season and first time they have ever beaten them in consecutive games.
  • The Lady Knights won the second game of the doubleheader on April 14th and then in game one on Friday (April 28).
  • The Lady Knights won despite committing a season-high six errors.
     
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • California (Pa.) jumped out on the Lady Knights in game two with a four-run first inning.
  • The Lady Knights got a run back in the top of the third inning with a lead-off home run from Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area). The home run was Ingerick's first of her career.
  • Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) occupied first base in the fourth inning when Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) ripped a triple to left field, scoring Wilp to cut the deficit to 4-2.
  • The Lady Knights couldn't rally, though. California (Pa.) tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth and took game two, 5-2.
     
GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Ingerick went 2-for-3 with a home run.
  • Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) also had a two-hit day from the plate.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is tied with Seton Hill for the top spot in the PSAC West Division at 12-6. The top three seeds from the West Division will advance to the conference tournament.
  • The Lady Knights own the tiebreaker head-to-head with Seton Hill as Gannon won three-of-four matchups this season.
     
UP NEXT
  • The Lady Knights will play Slippery Rock on Senior Day in the final regular-season games.
  • The PSAC doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. and senior day festivities taking place at 12:30 p.m.
