Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Opens Season with Setback at No. 5 Florida Southern

  • The Short Story: The No. 5 Florida Southern women's lacrosse team scored the final eight goals of the first half and spoiled Gannon's season debut Wednesday night with an 18-4 victory on the Mocs' home turf.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon scored the contest's first goal when junior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) found the back of the net unassisted two minutes and 31 seconds into the affair.
  • Florida Southern responded with the next six goals to assume a 6-1 lead as the two teams closed in on the midway point of the first half.
  • Gannon netted its second goal on sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton)'s unassisted tally at the 16:45 mark, cutting the deficit to 6-2.
  • Florida Southern countered with the final eight goals of the half that gave the Mocs a commanding 14-2 advantage at the intermission.
  • As it did during the first half, Gannon scored first after the break. Sophomore Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) recorded the unassisted goal.
  • After four more Florida Southern scores, King produced her second goal of the match with 6:39 to play.
  • The Mocs added one more goal, before capturing an 18-4 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Florida Southern generated advantages in shots (32-14), ground balls (23-14), draw controls (15-9) and fewest turnovers (12-22).
  • King led the Gannon scoring attack with two goals, five draw controls and three ground balls.
  • Bower and Martinelli added one score each.
  • Senior Ali Owczarzak (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart) tied King for the team lead in ground balls with three.
  • Freshman Charla Tate (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) made her collegiate debut, recording 10 saves between the pipes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon played at Florida Southern during its season-opening spring break trip for the fifth consecutive season.
  • The Mocs are ranked No. 5 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top 25 Poll after being tabbed No. 1 in the preseason national rankings.
  • King became the 23rd Lady Knight in school history to record 120 career points.
