  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights opened up the 2017 season with a split against Tiffin and Davenport on Sunday, Feb. 26, in Clermont, Fla.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) began scored the first run of the 2017 season when she ripped a ball over the fence for a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
  • The Lady Knights tallied two more runs on a Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) single in the fourth inning that plated Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) and Morgan. Gannon went up 3-0.
  • Two batters later, Allie Salerno (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) hit a ball back to the pitcher who made an error. Salerno reached first base and Wilp scored an unearned run. Gannon took a 4-0 lead over the Dragons.
  • The Lady Knights' final run came in the sixth inning when Jen Moran (West Mifflin, Pa./Fox Chapel) smashed a double, Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) rounded the bases, coming home for the Lady Knights.
     
GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Wilp went 2-for-4 with an RBI out of the lead-off spot.
  • Martinez finished 2-for-3 with one run.
  • Moran recorded two hits and had an RBI.
  • Senior Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) tossed a complete game, allowing just four hits. She struck out nine and walked two.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE – GAME ONE
  • The contest represented Gannon's season opener.
  • Six of Gannon's nine starters recorded a hit.
  • The Lady Knights won their season opener for the fourth time in the last five years.
     
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Davenport picked up three unearned runs in the first inning.
  • In the top of the second inning, the Panthers picked up two more runs on a McKenzie Rowe double.
  • DU's Aby Brambila followed with a fielder's choice that allowed another run to score.
  • Davenport ended the inning getting three runs total and led 7-0.
  • Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) led off the bottom of the second with a double to center field. She advanced to third on a groundout but was stranded there.
  • Davenport added a run in the fifth inning to go up 8-0.
  • Gannon second baseman Sam Rivera (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to the shortstop but advanced after the Lady Knights couldn't connect hits in the following three at-bats.   
     
GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Davenport is ranked No. 16 in the NAIA Top 25 rankings.
  • Four different Lady Knights recorded one hit each.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) went the distance, giving up five earned runs in five innings. She also struck out four batters and walked one.
