HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon grabbed firm control early, scoring seven consecutive points to assume a 14-5 lead six minutes and 35 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Evan Phoenix (Stevensville, Md./Calvert Hall) and junior Damon Miraud (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) started the run with lay-ups, before junior Zay Jackson (Queens, N.Y./Westside) drilled a three-pointer.
  • A tip-in and free throw by Miraud moments later pushed the Golden Knights' lead into double digits at 17-7 with 11:33 left in the first half.
  • Gannon's advantage reached 15 points on three different occasions during the final six minutes, before Jackson's long three-pointer at the buzzer gave the home team its biggest lead of the first half at 42-26.
  • The Golden Knights opened the second half with a Phoenix jumper to assume their biggest lead of the evening at 44-26.
  • Gannon's advantage was 59-45 after a Phoenix dunk at the 11:28 mark, but that's when Edinboro started to make its move.
  • Seven consecutive points by the Fighting Scots cut the deficit to 61-54 after a three-pointer by Jaymon Mason.
  • Gannon responded back-to-back buckets from senior Matthew Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) to regain an 11-point edge (65-54) at the 8:37 mark.
  • Trailing 68-57, Edinboro ripped off an 11-2 run that brought the visitors within two points. The final play of the blitz was a four-point play by Mason with 3:41 to play.
  • The Fighting Scots eventually tied the contest at 72 on a pair of Mason free throws with 2:49 showing on the clock.
  • Gannon appeared to have held off the Edinboro comeback though after Dogan regained the lead with two free throws and extended it to 77-72 with a triple at the 1:47 mark. However, those were the last points of the evening for the Golden Knights.
  • Andre Frederick and Sheldon Brogdon countered with lay-ups, cutting the deficit to 77-76 with 49 seconds left.
  • Following a Gannon miss, Mason then came around a pick at the top of the key and drilled an open jumper just inside the arc for a 78-77 lead with 20 seconds left.
  • Gannon worked for the final shot that was off the mark, but the Golden Knights were fouled with one second left after grabbing the rebound. The front end of the ensuing one-and-one was off the mark and the horn sounded to signal a 78-77 Edinboro victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Four of Gannon's five starters reached double digits in scoring for the fourth consecutive game.
  • Miraud recorded his fifth double-double with a career-high 20 points and 14 rebounds, hitting 9-of-12 shots and 2-of-3 free throws.

  • Mason headlined the Edinboro scoring attack with 26 points, seven assists, five rebounds and five steals. He scored all but two of those points during the second half.
  • Brogdon and Frederick chipped in 15 and 11 points off the bench, respectively.
  • Edinboro shot 50 percent (30-60) from the floor, including a blistering 57.6 percent (19-33) during its second-half comeback. The Fighting Scots shot 47.6 percent (10-21) from behind the arc and 72.7 percent (8-11) from the charity stripe.

  • Wednesday's doubleheader was highlighted by a special ceremony dedicating the Hammermill Center court in honor of longtime athletics supporter, Gary Miller Classic sponsor and Gannon Athletics Hall of Famer Gary Miller. A Gary Miller logo colored in maroon and gold was placed on both sides of the court prior to the season. All box scores throughout the season have indicated the location as Gary Miller Court at the Hammermill Center.
