Gannon Men's Basketball Team Unable To Complete Second-Half Rally at Kutztown

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon men's basketball team fought back from a 14-point deficit to pull within two points midway through the second half, but was unable to complete the comeback during a 67-62 loss at Kutztown Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover action at Keystone Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kutztown initially held Gannon without a field goal for the first seven minutes and six seconds. The Golden Bears generated a 15-5 lead during that time frame, surrendering only five free throws.
  • Gannon finally converted its first field goal attempt when senior Jair Green (Williamstown, N.J./Paul VI) scored on a lay-up at the 12:54 mark.
  • Kutztown pushed its lead into double digits with 8:53 left in the first half after back-to-back lay-ups.
  • Green countered with five straight points after a three-pointer and two free throws, cutting the deficit to 22-17.
  • Leading 30-21, Kutztown held Gannon without a field goal for two minutes and 47 seconds while putting together a 7-2 run and extending its lead to 37-23 with 1:41 showing on the clock.
  • Gannon scored six of the final 10 points of the half, before heading to the intermission with a 41-29 deficit.
  • Trailing 51-39, Gannon started its comeback by holding Kutztown scoreless for four minutes and 44 seconds. Overall, the Golden Bears went without a field goal for seven minutes and 57 seconds.
  • The Golden Knights scored eight consecutive points during the stretch, clawing within 51-47 on Green's jumper at the 12:26 mark. Senior Gerrell Williams (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) ignited the run with back-to-back baskets.
  • Kutztown bumped its lead back to 53-47, before Green and Williams brought Gannon within 53-51 after consecutive buckets midway through the second half.
  • It eventually proved to be the closest the Golden Knights would get as Kutztown maintained a lead between two and eight points the rest of the way.
  • Gannon pulled within a single possession three times during the final 10 minutes, but surrendered points during Kutztown's next possession twice and missed a jumper during its only opportunity to tie.

GAME NOTES
  • Sunday's contest was the third of a four-game road swing for Gannon.
  • Green led all scorers on both sides with a career-high 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
  • Senior Damon Miraud (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) followed with 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
  • Williams added a season-high 11 points off the bench.
  • Junior Evan Phoenix (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds in only 18 minutes of action.
  • Gannon shot 37.7 percent (23-61) from the field, 10 percent (1-10) from three-point range and 75 percent (15-20) from the free throw line. 
  • Anthony Lee topped the Kutztown scoring attack with 18 points while surpassing the 1,000-point plateau for his career.
  • Dan Cuevas produced 15 points and eight rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting.
  • Ethan Ridgeway had a double-double with 12 points and 11 assists.
  • Kutztown shot 50.9 percent (28-55) from the floor, 14.3 percent (2-14) from behind the arc and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the charity stripe.
  • The game was decided in the paint where 78 of the 129 points were scored.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon has been listed among others receiving votes in three of four Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) Atlantic Region Media Polls this season.
  • Sunday's game was a rematch of last year's PSAC semifinal won by Kutztown 91-85 in overtime. The Golden Bears rallied from a nine-point deficit during the final two minutes of regulation in that contest.
  • Kutztown was picked to finish second in the PSAC Eastern Division according to the league's preseason coaches poll after advancing to last year's PSAC title game.
  • The Golden Bears defeated Gannon for the third consecutive time, cutting their deficit in the all-time series to 13-4.
  • Green set career-highs in points (22), free throws made (11), free throws attempts (13) and rebounds (8).
  • Gannon had four student-athletes score double-digit points for the second time this season.
  • Williams posted season-highs in points (11), field goals made (5) and field goals attempted (11).
  • Gannon's 10 steals were its most since having 11 during an 81-76 victory at Mansfield on January 21.
  • Kutztown is the first team to shoot over 50 percent against Gannon this season. The Golden Bears hit 63 percent (26-41) of their two-point field goal attempts.
