Gannon Men's Basketball Team Rolls Into Holiday Break with 88-63 Victory Against Notre Dame (Video)

  • The Short Story: Junior Zay Jackson (Queens, N.Y./Westside) poured in a season-high 25 points and all 15 Golden Knights in uniform saw playing time as the Gannon men's basketball team rolled into the holiday break with an 88-63 victory against Notre Dame (Ohio) Tuesday night at the Hammermill Center. The Golden Knights begin the NCAA Division II mandated dead period tomorrow and will return to campus in seven days.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Notre Dame held its only lead of the evening at 2-1 during the opening seconds before Gannon scored five straight points on a lay-up by senior Damon Miraud (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) and three-pointer from Jackson. The Golden Knights would never trail again.
  • After a Notre Dame triple, Gannon ripped off 13 consecutive points to assume an 18-5 lead with 12:30 remaining in the first half. The Golden Knights held the Falcons without a point for four minutes and 28 seconds during the run.
  • Four different Golden Knights scored during the 13-0 blitz, led by five points from Jackson. Junior Daryl Porter (Southfield, Mich./Walled Lake Western)'s jumper capped the rally.
  • Notre Dame cut the deficit to single digits three times later in the half, but Gannon bumped its lead back into double digits on its next possession each time.
  • A 9-0 run late in the first half gave Gannon its biggest lead of the opening stanza at 41-24 with 2:08 showing on the clock. Jackson ignited the run with a three-pointer and capped it with two free throws.
  • The two teams then split the final 12 points, before the Golden Knights went to halftime with a 47-30 advantage.
  • Notre Dame never got closer than 14 points during the final 20 minutes.
  • A 12-0 Gannon blitz midway through the second half put the outcome to rest, giving the Golden Knights their biggest lead of the evening at 71-44 with 10:06 to play. Senior Jair Green (Williamstown, N.J./Paul VI) and freshman Cyril Ogbuagu (Lagos, Nigeria/Riverdale Baptist (Md.)) had two baskets each during the stretch.
  • The two teams played on even terms the rest of the way, before Gannon secured an 88-63 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Tuesday's contest was the final one of the first semester for both programs before hitting the holiday break.
  • Jackson led all scorers on both sides with a season-high 25 points, hitting 9-of-16 shots overall and 5-of-10 three-pointers. Twenty of those points came during the first half.
  • Miraud followed with a season-high 13 points, five rebounds, a season-high five assists and three steals.
  • Green completed Gannon's trio of double-digit scorers with 12 points, four rebounds and three steals.
  • Gannon shot 53 percent (35-66) from the field, 36.4 percent (8-22) from three-point range and 62.5 percent (10-16) from the free throw line. 
  • Halil Parks topped Notre Dame with 22 points and five assists.
  • Oliver Megins and Levi Frankland added 13 and 11 points off the bench, respectively.
  • Drew Scarberry finished with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
  • Notre Dame shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the floor, 36.4 percent (12-33) from behind the arc and 50 percent (3-6) from the charity stripe.
  • Gannon out-rebounded Notre Dame 43-19, including an 18-3 edge on the offensive glass that led to a 20-5 advantage in second-chance points.
  • One game after receiving 49 minutes from five players off the bench, all 15 Golden Knights in uniform saw playing time and contributed 72 minutes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon was playing for the first time in 10 days since its 71-64 victory at previously-undefeated East Stroudsburg.
  • The Golden Knights were playing at the Hammermill Center for the first time since a 65-62 win against Northern Michigan in the Gary Miller Classic Championship Game, a span of 24 days.
  • Tuesday's contest was Gannon's final non-conference affair of the season. The final 17 games will come against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponents.
